To anyone who does kayak fishing at newport harbor, what lb weight are you using? I heard some say 3 lbs is enough, but will that be enough even in strong current?

Thanks

3lbs should be okay i use 2lbs for my float tube but remember to try to anchor or catch on some bottom structure, If you do 3lbs is plenty to hold you in place. But most of NPH is mudd, grass and sandy bottoms. If you can't seem to hold where you want to fish the anchor should allow you to drift at a slower pace during a very strong current, which is great for halibut fishing.

Use a plastic grocery bag, fill it up with sand and use it. May not hold good during a strong tidal movement, but it works fine otherwise. It will slow you down for a better drift. Be sure to tie bag closed at the top. Also remember to throw the bag away when you are done for the day (Put it in a trash can, or better yet, recycle it.
