Started heading up there at 2 AM from Montebello running off of 1 hour of sleep. Took a 5 hour energy and made it safe and sound to bishop area by 7 a.m including a few stops. my 2 friends sound asleep, didn't even know what was going on. (THE WIND WAS HOWLING! almost blown off the road a couple times)

tried a little creek at bishop for one large mouth bass and made the drive up to convict lake where we would stay the night.

Tried to pitch the tent first but the tent I borrowed from my friend had no tent poles. ARGHH!! opted to sleep in the car at night, but we had the whole day to fish in front of us!

Weather.com said 18-20 mph winds but mann.. the gusts would reach 40mph sometimes. It was RIDICULOUS wind!
I still decided to tube it, gave it about an hour on the tube kicking my little heart out but couldn't do it. Came back to shore soaked in ice cold water. We still managed to knock out three.

We tried driving up to twin but the wind was WORSE there. Went back down to owens. the scenery was gorgeous!! the river was flowing HUGE!!!
Every creek we saw happened to become small ponds due to the high rate of snow melt off.

Managed over a limits worth of rainbows and one ugly unidentified fish at the owens til we headed back up to camp.
cooked dinner. DELICIOUS (must see picture!) haha and we decided to do a couple hours at convict at night. the night bite was pretty solid, landing quite a few browns (mostly released) and a few more stocker rainbows. the wind had died a little which made this possible.

Crashed in our "toyota tent" (this was the rent a car... don't know if you guys remember my last report, my car got wrecked when I got back from fishing. Got this toyota rent a car with awesome mileage... which made this trip possible)

Morning came, wind was worse than yesterday. packed up headed down south to calmer weather. hit a few ponds creeks and lakes for some ones and twos everywhere we went. bite was never solid, we couldnt find the fish, we opted for breakfast at paiutes casino. had their awesome steak breakfast for 3.99 and won some cash then headed back out.
hit a couple more spots for more 1s and 2s and our last stop was the honey hole. Caught a ton of beautiful holdovers/naturals at the last spot. full fins and nice colors.

oh, got stopped by DFG at one spot which was cool. did the coolor/trunk/license check. very polite and informative.

enough reading, i'll let the pics do the talking.

Great pics, the fish you caught in the Owens was a sucker fish, a worthless fish. Upper Owens looked like its running high, I'm leaving tomorrow for a week up there..

The mystery fish appears to be a chub. Sucker fish have "human" looking lips on the bottom, like sturgeon.

It's a Mountain Whitefish. Our crew has managed to catch at least one of those on each of our last 4 or 5 trips. Thanks for the report!

Definitely a Tui Chub. This site has an excellent database of fish info and pictures:

We catch them all the time in June and Gull lakes. June in particular is swarming with them, you can see large schools of fry in the shallows. One time my wife kept one (out of Gull lake, so it's not one of the threatened subspecies) and cooked it up. Suprisingly it tasted pretty good, very white flesh, but too many bones for my liking.
