The gf wanted to go fishing, so i took her back down to sunset to maybe get ourselves some beans, seeing that they were pretty thick down there. went straight down to huntington this time to get sand crabs first. plenty of dime sized crabs but practically all of them were hard shelled. maybe one or two softshells with roe. headed back to sunset, walked down to the surf and saw it was a 0 tide. good time for the beans, saw plenty of them cruising. no takers. ran into a few fnn members down there, nice to meet you mike, all saying that they had no luck on the sliders either. tide slowly started to come back in but nothing was biting at all. i remembered the day before that the fish weren't biting at all until just before high tide. so to pass the time we walked over to the harbor house and got some awesome breakfast. after our corn beef hash and eggs and breakfast quesadilla, we got our gear and headed back down to the beach and put our lines back in. started out slow, gf landed a small sngf that she hooked in the tail, he biggest shark to date so she was pretty happy since she loves sharks. then the perch bite started to go wo, all typical palm sized for me, but the gf was getting a steady pick on nice 7 inchers, which ended up being the size of my biggest.

my biggest
and finally it happened, i managed to find one the softshelled crabs and told alison,"this right here is corbina candy." Casted it out into the trough and WHAM, fish on. really fun fight on my UL, first bean of the year for me. nothing enormous, probably about 15-16" long.

the real surprise of the day was this
http://fishingnetwork.net/images/tmp2/45-Sunset.jpg
about 9" long, must've bumped him on the head with my sand crab while i was reeling in because he apparently ate the crab and was not foul hooked. that was a first for me to catch a butt on a crab. all in all it was a good day.

final count:

gf- approx. 20 perch(all bigger than mine), 1 sngf
me-approx 15 perch,1 bean, 1 butt

on a sidenote, the beans down at sunset seem to be extremely finicky, they would not hit most crabs, or ghost shrimp, maybe they are targeting worms. will be down sometime next week to see if maybe they'll hit a lug or nuclear worm.

Great report rusty6 8)
I've had some good luck lately by using a tiny piece of fresh mussel put on the hook before I pin on a crab. I think the beans think the mussel is actually roe on the crab due to the color simularity. HEh Heh Heh 8)
FAKE ROE....FAKE ROE!!!!!
It has been real good in the southbay and I get my mussels right off of the pier and jetty rocks.
