Good afternoon,

Couldn’t decide last night whether to fish wipers, or the surf, so decided late last night to fish the surf, since Tuesday they bit pretty good for me.

Woke up fairly early, I had to drive all the way to Seal Beach to pick up some GULP! Camo sandworms for my surf mission, since all the tackle shops don’t open till 10:00 am. So I made the long run to Seal Beach, purchased some, and headed South on PCH until I reached Laguna Beach, the same area that I fished on Tuesday.

LAGUNA BEACH A.M.

It was really overcast this morning, even misting fairy hard. I arrived at my first spot, I wanted to try my luck again in this location, with a different set up than my previous trip. To start off this morning, I set up a #1/0 Owner worm hook, a GULP! Ghost Shrimp, and a split shot. Wanted to get my surf Calico, even though technically I was on the rocks AT the beach, lol. The tide was lower than it was on Tuesday when I fished here, so I made my way onto the rock, and made my first cast into the kelp/rocks. The surge and waves were pretty brutal this morning, so I had to plan my cast correctly. I let my GGS slowly drift with the current, down into the depths, when I got smoked! I set the hook, and fish was on! It fought really well, wasn’t quite sure what it was, until I landed it. My first surf buttermouth perch!! Lol

Quickly photographed and released the fish. Made another few casts for zip, then switched over to other side, made a cast into kelp/rocks, then BAM! Fish on! Pulled it through the kelp onto the rocks, and was happy to see it was my first surf calico! Lol! Photographed and released!

That was pretty much it, the surf was getting bigger, and I didn’t want any part of getting soaked or washed away, so I made my way up the beach to try my luck on the perch. Got to my spot, and re-rigged my gear. On this spot, I set up with a #4 Owner Mosquito Hook, Carolina rigged with a swivel, foot and a half leader, and a GULP! Camo sandworm, cut down.

Made my first cast….then my second..then third…etc. No biters for awhile, so I move up the beach a short distance, and made another cast. BAM! Fish on! After a short battle, got my second perch of the day.

TWO

Today was MUCH tougher than Tuesday, the surge was horrible, and the surf was a lot larger than before. I couldn’t keep my rig in the zone for very long, so I had to made countless casts. I did see some Beens surfing, nice ones too. I looked for some Sand Crabs to pitch at them, but I couldn’t find any. So I continued my perch mission, working very hard for the few that I did get.

THREE

FIVE

Broke off a larger section of SW, made a cast and BAM!! This one was definitely bigger, if it was a perch, it was a PIG!! After a great battle, I saw it wasn’t a perch…..but instead, a nice croaker!

Then, back to the walleyes, lol!

I kept getting the walleyes, but I wanted BSP. They didn’t want to cooperate today, and I only landed one.

After awhile, I really got tired fighing the surge and surf, plus I noticed the time. I did not have all day to fish like I did on Tuesday, which I was bummed, because I know they were going to bite in the early afternoon. So I made a few more casts, and knew I had about 30 minutes to fish NPH on the way home, so I packed my gear, and headed North. Arrived at the Island a short time later.

N.P.H. P.M.

I did one of my usual set ups, a #1/0 Owner Worm Hook, GULP! 3 inch Shrimp in Nuclear Chicken, and a ¼ oz D/S sinker. Picked a spot to start, and made a few casts for nothing. One more cast, produced this leviathan of the deep, lmfao!

THE BEAST!

Moved down the beach, picked a dock, made a cast…BAM! Fish on! This one put up a great fight, trying to get me into the pilings, but to no avail.

LIL BIGGER!

I looked at the time, and I knew I had to go. So I packed the truck, and headed home.

Until next time…….

Nice job out there GD!
I knew you would head back down to Laguna. Enjoy it while you can!
It seems that the perch are always dinks down in those waters, even when I head there I've never had one over 10".
Congrats on your Calico and Buttermouth!

Steve,

Congrats on another Sucessful Perchy day! Oh And the Spot and Sandie!

Don't give up on the Harbor persuit as they are just moving around to new locations as the water warms!

The pic of the Berkely Boat looks to be that of non other than a very well Sponsored and allaround saltwater fisherman "Jimmy Decker" He is a prior Season Chanpion of the "SWBA" and puts on an annual Tourney in the harbor as well as a very experienced guide and "Rock Star"

Leave those perch alone and get back to the Spotties! Have you thought that your friend the Harbor Kitty might be responsible for the lack of "Toads" at that spot. Just a thought!
