Sierra’s Final Day Sunday June 6th

Got a little more sleep last night, I believe most of us woke up later than planned. I believe that we got up around 6:30 a.m. and Seng was making breakfast once again. Today he was making Shimp Omellettes, Sausage, Corn on the cob, and Eggos. Another great breakfast Seng, thanks man!

FINAL BREAKFAST! THANKS SENG!

As we were cleaning up, we were trying to decide what we were going to do today. I still hadn’t completed my second goal this weekend, which was to catch a wild/brown trout. So I was kind of bummed, and at some point during these conversations, fishbandit Mark said that he would take us after Crowley to check out some wild/brown trout action if we wanted, so I was VERY excited now. I think I was a bit more enthusiastic then the others about it, I don’t know, I could be wrong, I don’t know, lol.

We had quite a bit of packing to do this morning first, so we all packed and finished some last minute clean up. We packed our trucks and cars, Seng checked us out of the lodge, and we headed South to Crowley. The others were about 5 minutes ahead of us.

Once we arrived at Crowley and met the rest of the group, I was talking with fishbandit Mark and we (our group) decided to go hit up some brown hunting FIRST, then come back to fish Crowley. So we picked up some N/C’s, water, and more ice for the fish we had frozen in the freezer at the lodge. I asked Seng, Warren, and Damien FIRST if they would like to go, or just stay and fish Crowley and Mark and I would go, I mean if they really weren’t into fishing the browns, and they all agreed they wanted to go. Within a few minutes, not sure as to how or why, they decided to stay back and fish Crowley, so it looked like it would be myself and brown_trout_guide Mark, lol. So those three jumped out of my truck, and Mark and I headed South to a different location then originally planned with the other three, since it was only him and I now.

During the drive South, we had some great little conversations about SW fishing, and other things. Once we arrived at the location, we set up our gear, walked under the gate, and proceeded to head down the canyon in search of the Brown Trout. During our set up at my truck, I also figured out that MARK IS THE GUY WHO IS GIVING ME A RUN FOR MY MONEY FOR REPORT OF THE MONTH! LOLOLOL! I told him it’s ok if he beats me, he is making it up by guiding me to my first brown! LOL!

I was amazed at the beauty and terrain of this place. Simply amazing. Once we got down the mountain, you could look into the stream, and see the browns sitting in the pools, that really excited me and also amazed me. I had set up with a #6 mosquito hook 2 lb mainline, and a topshot of 2 lb fluorocarbon.

Mark told me what I needed to do as far as where to cast and attempt to catch, so I made my first cast upstream, and floated my half of N/C back down stream, the goal being to end up in or around the calmer waters of the pools. This was a little tougher than you would think, due to the trees and brush growing around the stream. Also, there were only certain parts that were “accessible” to fish, and the stream was not very wide at all. Mark was letting me fish the first few spots, while he coached and watched me, due to the fact that he knew how bad I wanted my first wild/brown trout, which I REALLY appreciated. That is a great person right there, thinking about someone else before they think of themselves, which is the way it should be. THANK YOU MARK! My first few casts and the first few spots produced nothing for me but spooked trout. These things are VERY spooky and sketchy. So you really had to be sneaky as hell to have a chance with them.

MY FIRST EVER CAST FISHING WILD/STREAM/BROWN TROUT! THANKS MARK!

We reached spot number 4-ish, and I INSISTED that while I fished this spot, that Mark fish another spot about 10 yards upstream, I felt bad about him not fishing yet, lol. I spotted about 5 trout in my area, and made a cast. I looked upstream at Mark, and saw him go BENDO! I was reaching for my camera, when I got SMACKED! Well, of course I missed mine, and by this time, I saw Mark had landed his, but he was too far upstream to get a pic, we wanted to get these trout back into the water asap. I was happy for Mark for getting one, but at the same time, frustrated that I missed mine. So we worked out way farther upstream, and we came to a spot where I spotted a nicer brown trout, and told Mark to get his ***! Lol

THE SPOT!

Mark expertly snuck up on the trout, in super stealth mode, and made his cast….BAM! FISH ON! The fish put up an excellent fight, at one point making Mark run upstream VERY fast, which made me nervous because he was in danger of falling into this plant that he on a previous day just rubbed against, and the toxins of this plant actually went thru his pants and made him burn and itch pretty bad. If he would have slipped, this would have been bad, much more than “rubbing against.”

HOOOOKKKUUUPP!! DOWNSTREAM!

After a few quick pictures, the fish was safely released! We moved our way farther upstream, and found a spot for me to cast. I spotted about 3 trout in this small area, and casted upstream. I followed by eyesight my N/C, and saw a trout eyeballing my worm. Then, without warning (these things are FAST!), it inhaled my worm and ran behind a rock! I set the hook, and the fight was on! It was funny how nervous I was, but this was my first wild/brown trout ever, and I wanted to land it! So after I babied the hell out of it, I finally, with Mark’s help, landed my FIRST EVER WILD/BROWN TROUT!!

THANKS MARK!!

After a couple quick pictures, we safely released it back into the stream. Second goal accomplished!

We looked at the time and decided that we were going to head to the furthest fishable part of this stream, where Mark had some decent luck previously. I didn’t know how long Seng, Warren, and Damien were going to want to be at Crowley where I left them, so I unfortunately was kind of restrained for time. A little while later, we were at the spot.

We rigged up the same, only this time with a very small BB shot, and using half a N/C. Mark made a cast in the zone, and fish ON!

HOOOOKKUUPP!!

It looked like a larger fish, but unfortunately, it spit the hook, and he lost it. Meanwhile, I made my cast uphill of the current, and a short time later…FISH ON!!!

Mark missed a few more fish, and I also missed two, and we reluctantly packed up to leave to go get Seng and the others. Final count was Mark- 2 GD- 4 What a great short stream session, thank you VERY much Mark! We made the 2-3 mile hike back to my truck, and headed back up to Crowley to get the rest of my group.

We arrived at Crowley to find D sleeping under a tree in his chair, and Seng and Warren sitting in the shop to get some shade. Apparently, they were done about 2 hours before I arrived…sorry guys!

We said our goodbyes to Mark, and headed South, the original plan was head towards home. When we arrived in Bishop, Seng asked me if I was in a hurry to get home. I said “Hell no, what you have in mind homie?” Him and Warren wanted to hit a stream/canal down the street for some Crawdads before we headed home. I said sure, no problem!

But first we stopped at a great sandwhich shop that Seng recommended, where, because I am white, the lady hooked my up with 3 cookies, and Seng only got 1….because hes black!!! LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Thanks for lunch homie!

We arrived at Bishop Canal, and took out a few Sac Perch for bait, and OG Warren and Seng set up some “rods” consisting of line and sticks, lol. They tried to catch them without a net, which they couldn’t do, so we ran down the street to purchase one, which really helped throughout the rest of the afternoon with the Crawdad slaying! I saw some kids swimming, which REALLLLLLLLY sounded good, cuz it was really hot! So as they were Crawdadding, I changed into my swim shorts, and got into water. It was pretty cold, but at the same time, felt REALLLLLLY good!!

That’s the way we spent the rest of the afternoon, floating down the canal, swimming, crawdadding, laughing…basically have another GREAT memorable day. Here’s some pics, I know someone took one of my swimming, I thought it was on my camera, but I guess not.

We decided to call it a day and head for home at 5:30 pm. What an EXCELLENT EXCELLENT weekend! I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend, I had the time of my life with my old friend Seng, and new friends that I made this weekend. We also had the best 5 hour ride home, full of jokes, stories, and a LOT of laughs. I dropped OG Warren off at his pad, then Seng, then made my way home to drop D off to his truck. I was in my pad my midnight.

Until next time……

Enjoyed the report. Looks like you guys had a blast. Thanks so much for posting here!

Since you guys were C&Ring those wild trout; I would recommend switching from bait to lures such as spinners and even fly fishing flies. Flies and nymph imitations CAN be fished using spinning tackle on small streams just fine. Shoot I'd even say go ahead and try fly fishing (tons more fun)!

The problem with bait and C&R is that quite often they swallow the morsel. And wrenching it out of his guts won't help in maintaining that wild trout population. Even when you release them and they swim away, they wind up a day later floating. I'm not saying every fish you caught was gut hooked. But the odds when using bait are extremely high and counter-productive to C&R.

Best of Luck and congrats again!

Yeah, they rust over a period of time, unless its a bleeder then i take it since its gonna die any way. Im heading to Crowley june 25-27 and staying at the lodge. Cant wait.
