Good evening,

After recently just returning from the Sierra’s, I wasn’t going to fish for a little bit. But, I woke up this morning and decided that I was going to go fishing anyways, the plan was just for a little while. Well, it turned out to be more than a little while, lol.

Threw all my gear in my truck, and decided to fish NPH, even though, it has been VERY slow, at least for me fishing the shore. After about a 10 minute drive, I was at todays’s starting location, the peninsula, and not the usual Balboa Island that I normally fish.

NEWPORT HARBOR A.M.

Today I was going to start out with 8 lb line, ¾ ounce D/S sinker, #1 Owner Mosquito Hook, and a 3 Inch GULP! Shrimp in Nuclear Chicken.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/NPH%20LAGUNA%20NPH%206%208%2010/SDC11784.jpg

I started out on east side, and worked my way under, between , and through every area that I could either flip into, or cast into. I missed exactly two fish that did not want to commit, and saw a spot that looked good, so I flipped out my rig, and worked it back to shore. TAP! TAP! I set the hook hard, and the fight was on. This fish was MEAN, immediately it took me to the left, straight under a mussel filled dock. He knew where to get away, or at least he thought. Using some past experiences in this situation, and after losing fish, I stuck my rod tip very far, straight out, and under the water. This allowed me not to get broke off on the mussel, however, this fish was seriously strong, and all I could do was pull the rod out to the right, and try to turn it’s head, which was no easy task. Finally, I felt his head turn and pulled him out from under the dock. He took some drag, I kept my tip up to turn its head, and finally, it did, and I was able to pump the fish back to the beach, and beach it. Finally, I got a decent Spottie.

Walked up the beach back towards my truck, saw a spot, made a cast, and BAM! Another nice spottie on, this one I beached after a short battle.

I tried a couple more spots, for no hits, and decided that I wanted to do some Recon down South a little, possibly Laguna Beach, so I loaded my truck, and jumped on PCH South towards Laguna.

LAGUNA BEACH MID-DAY

I was really not sure where to go, as I had never fished down here before, but I know what I wanted to fish, and I knew how to look for decent spots. I found a spot I wanted to try, to hopefully get my first surf calico, and if this didn’t work out, I was going to fish Surf Perch. So I found a spot to park, and headed down the walkway and stairs to the beach.

WTF? HEY BUNNY RABBIT!! LOL

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/NPH%20LAGUNA%20NPH%206%208%2010/SDC11797.jpg

I tried the above D/S rig, and between the surf and the surge, it made it difficult to fish, so I decided to give up on this spot, and make the long walk back up to my truck and go a little bit north of this spot, I saw a beach I wanted to try on the way down for some Surf Perch, so I packed up, again, got to my truck, again, loaded my truck, again, and headed a little North.

Found a parking spot for the beast, and made the walk down to the beach. Between the Sierra’s trip hiking, and today, I have been getting a lot of exercise recently, my legs are KILLING me!

I HATE STAIRS!

For this spot, I switched over to a #4 mosquito hook, Carolina rigged, ½ oz slider, and some GULP! Sandworm in camo.

Ok, enough of these, I wanted some BSP’s! Lol, so I shortened my cast to right over the wave break. Tap! Tap! I set the hook, and fish on!

FIFTH! A BSP!

After the sixteenth one, I was out of sandworms! GRRRRR!! No worries, so I left them biting and decided to head back to NPH for a few casts before I went home. So again, walked a mile up stairs and hills, got back to my truck, and headed North on PCH to NPH. I wanted to finish my day off on the Island.

Found a spot for my beast, and started off on the North Side. Made a couple casts, and BAM! Fish on!! This one tried to get me under the mooring line, which was NOT going to happen, I turned it’s head, and after a great fight, beached this!

Steve,

Nice return trip to the harbor with a couple of quality Spots and surviving the harbor midday blues by hitting the surf for some perch action!

Where is the blurring of the background now as you just gave away my "Honey Hole" :Bawling: :Guns: Joking!

I am looking very forward to a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry low tsunami tide to retrieve some of my gear that has been captured by a very greedy underwater feature in you first pic!

Again congrats to a nice day on the water!

Nice outing GD. I need to give that nuclear chicken another try. I think I gave up on it too fast the first time I tried it out. Nice perch slay.

Hey GD,
Nice report and pics of the nice SBB and all those perch. I hit that spot in Laguna and it usually produces for me also.
Next time throw a bobber set-up together and you can get Greenilngs and Sheepshead while standing out on those rocks at low tide.
Way to put in the long hours,
