Can anyone suggest a good fishing light to use when moonlight fishing at Castaic from a boat? Is it necessary?

Do you want a headlamp or what? A headlamp definitely helps a lot.

If you're talking about a headlamp, unless you can see in the dark or have dog/cat vision yes it's necessary. You can use a battery powered camping lantern (kerosene powered not recommended on a boat).
If you're looking for a headlamp you just missed a great sale at REI on a "Black Diamond Spot" LED headlamp for $10 off the $39.99 reg. price. The"Black Diamond Cosmo" is another good value headlamp on sale online(http://www.rei.com/product/761907) at REI for $20.93. I have both and am very pleased with them. Check out some of the reviews in Backpacker and other Mountaineering publications.
IMO they are even better than the industry leader Petzel!
Hope this helps,
LW.

Thanks for the replies, but I didn't communicate my question correctly..

I'm a boater and wondered do other boaters:

1. use a bait light
2. use any other lights when on the water

I have a headlamp..sorry for the confusion..

Thanks

I have a fluorescent that I drop about 10-15 '. Clips on the battery terminals, and works very well. One warning though, if you are fishing around several boaters with lights, then it really does not warrant the effort. The lights work much better when they are few and far between.
