This might be one of my longest reports in such a long time. Stayed up at the Riverview Lodge. Great place to stay and the best part is you have the river right in your backyard. I arrived Thursday and settled in and grabbed a nice cold beer and the Magician was ready with his magic wand. I went down to the river and threw a few casts for nothing drinking my beer. John comes down and throws 5 casts and 5 fish in a matter of minutes with his magic wand and he says " I'm done", I have my limit! LOL I told Meghan what the hell just happened? All that and I didn't even finish my Beer... He then blesses me with his wand and tells me to fish. Meghan hooks up and then so do I.
From that point on, the relaxation set in and the juice and the river was flowing for 5 days...It was great to be back on the river in such a long time... The water is flowing higher by the day. Went up to Mcnallys for a burger one of the days and the lady said someone got swept in the river.. not sure if they found him yet. Trying to recap 5 days is very difficult I will try my best. The fish were very plentiful and very colorful. Lot of holiday weekend pressure and tons of poachers!!! Poachers on the water stealing the fish and Poachers at the Kernville Saloon poachin pitchers of beer! lol It was nice to wake up at 11am go catch limits and sit on the river. Went up to the lake one of the Days with the Magician and he starting slammin the Crappie. I couldn't buy a bite the first 40 minutes and him and the girl were goofin on me. I switched over the Pinky and it was all over. I almost had to stop fishing... lol It was fun to get out there for a couple hours, Lake was not windy at all. All in all great weekend and lot of laughs. Once again if you are in the Kernville Area and want a great place to stay, Hit up the Fishin Magician. I highly recommend his lodge and cool peeps.

Hey what kind of fish is this? I remember seeing those swimming around the Kern and couldn't get them to bite. It's not a type of carp is it?

Some people call them squawfish, some people call them suckerfish, I call them freshwater sharks... they eat everything...lol This one was pretty big, 2 pounds at least...it fought like hell on 2 lb test...

Did you post every picture you took? LOL!
Seriously, I had a blast all wekend. It was definitely good times. Loved the fishing and friendship. Haven't poached that many beers in a while. Stayed up way too late. Lots of sun, suds and fish all weekend. I'm keeping an eye on the crappie and the mouth of the river for the big trout. River is flowing at 3,500 today. Compared with the 2,000 we had over the weekend, it's raging. Should hit 5,000 by this weekend.

i was told when i see one of them.. don't throw it back in. they eat all of our trout we pay the state for... let them die and give it to the vultures and crows...

but...

nice freakin pics bro.. i was out there on the memorial weekend.. none of my friends wanted to fish the river... too many people on the weekend. but caught a few large mouth bass and some crappie... damn I wish we did go to the river... I'm going up soon... very soon...

and actually only 2nd time fishing the kern! i have fished more rivers in utah and montana than i have in cali put together. so i got an idea as to what im doing out there....what i hoping you guys can point out are some areas near/around campsites to hit up?buddy and I are heading up tonight at midnight do to wife/kid matters, but leaving sunday sometime. we're going to wander the dispersed campgrounds hoping to find a spot to squat until sunrise. suggestions? I heard the river will be pretty fast and deep this weekend, so the mouth will be a good start im sure. planning on trying worms, thomas bouyants and rapalas....any other pointers? i see a guy with a red tube and what appears to be crickets?? is that right? heard those are pretty tasty too! well, i will check back tonight, as i have plenty of time until departure. hopefully somebody is stuck at home and has time to check this thread.....if not, i shall return mondy with a report....thanks in advance!

never fished the kern, was thinking about making a trip up there. any advice on any good campgrounds? or any fishing advice at that?

Campgrounds range from fully developed with hook-ups and hot showers (Camp Kernville, Camp James, Rivernook, Mountain & River Adventures), BLM campgrounds with only table, fire pit and pit toilets (Headquarters, Camp 3, Hospital Flat, Gold Ledge, Fairview, Limestone) and dispersed camping with only dirt (Halfway, Thunderbird, Chico Flat, Spring Hill and more). Prices range from free for dispersed to $45+ for full hook-ups.
For fishing, drift salmon eggs, power bait, night crawlers and crickets. Spinners and spoons work good also.

and fish what area? unless it is a secret of course. what are the regulations for off-road use? i have a jeep and like to use it when i can to get back into deep pools that dont get fished often, but i always check if im allowed to be back there. lol

Where ever you camp, there should be good fishing there or within 100 yards. DFG stocks all the campgrounds and turnout areas. This really helps spread the fish out for better angling opportunities and increases a fish's chance to grow even bigger before being caught. I'll bet you find your own favorite spot in no time.
Flow is high now so most fish will be hugging the banks in eddys and pockets.
Stop by the forestry station here in town for off road maps or stop by the lodge and talk to me. There are some really great areas to go from mild to wild with creeks to fish as a bonus.
