My friend Matt and I were all geared up to go fishing on his uncle's boat when we got a call from him saying that due to wind warnings, we werent gonna make it out. Matt and I were bummed to say the least and we were planning to go fish spotties at NPH when his dad called saying that he'd get us passes for the Toronado overnight trip leaving that night.
I hastily gathered my gear and we were off to pierpoint landing to meet up with only 6 other costumers on the spacious boat. We were told the seabass were chewing pretty good at Catalina but that the squid was hard to come by, so we had to pay $10 extra which was kind of lame at first, but worth it in the end. We got to the squid grounds off palisades at about 1:30am and tried, rather unsuccessfully to make some squid. The few anglers who were awake, including Matt and I, fished some jigs along the bottom with no success. I went back to bed at around 3 and woke up again at 6 as we were heading West along the backside. We tried a number of spots all along the backside on the way to West End with no success at all. At about 9:30am we rounded West End at set up in a cove along with the Outrider and the Big Game 90. The conditions looked good and sure enough, we watched as the BG90 hung about 4 nice fish. I checked my knots and drags and then the Outrider, fishing right next to us, hung one. About a minute later Matt got bit and we could tell it was the right kind. As I watched him swing on the fish, I felt my squid get picked up hard. I swung hard and instantly felt strong headshakes. Matt and I fought our fish up near the bow and we both landed them with perfect gaff shots from the deckhand. This alternating bite between the Outrider, BG90, and us continued for a few hours with limits being caught for all.
We put on 9 fish for the 9 customers and Matt was the only angler to catch 2. I ended up winning the jackpot by about a 1/4oz or less. The fish was estimated to be 35-38lbs. It was my 1st legal seabass :Big Grin:
