We headed out early Thursday and arrived in Bishop at 8am. After some fuel and chili cheese bread, we continued up the hill into June Lake. The weather was nice all morning with a slight breeze in the afternoon. We fished Gull for several hours before calling it a day and checking in to our room and the June Lake Motel. What a great place to stay.

This is what it looked like pulling into the the marina:

We quickly inflated the tubes and hit the water for a wide open stocker bite. They were all over the split shot power worm. We were getting bit every other cast.

Friday morning we decided to fish June Lake which ended up being a mistake. Guy at Ernie's Tackle said the lake just started to turn before the cold front kicked in. June was completely dead for the first 3 hours we were there. I tried it all, woolys, midges, metal, plastic, crawlers... Nada. My buddy picked up 2 mini stockers dragging power bait.

There was still plenty of snow on the ground! We packed up around 9:30 and headed back to Gull for some more stockers. The wind picked up around 11:00 and blew us off the water. The wind chill had to drop them temps into the 30s.

Despite the howling wind, we still managed quite a few fish.

Headed to Grant for the evening bite and skunked it up there.

Since the Tioga Pass was closed and we didn't feel like driving around, we fished Gull all day Saturday. It was pretty damn cold. We fished most of the day in the snow, which I would take all day over the wind.

We caught several fish on power worms, spoons and spinners. They were all hitting lures on top of the water. We didn't have any luck fishing deep.

Woke up early Sunday to a lot of snow and decided to pack up and head home.

We stopped at Mt Whitney on the way home, what a sad story. That place is about to be closed down.

I can't wait to get up there again in June.

Thanks for reading!

To bad about the weather not being more accommodating. Yeah, I can deal with the snow, but the wind is another story.
Have fished numberous times in the snow, it's a whole lot of fun! And the scenery can't be beat either!
To bad about Mt. Whitney , many memories from childhood . Figure it'll be closed in the next two years or so. :Crying::Crying:
Thanks for the post and some nice pics.

one piece of advice I give is when the weather goes to pot at June or Mammoth, fish the Upper Owens or Crowley. They can both be excellent cold weather producers. The Lower Owens and PVR are excellent choices too, they are much warmer than the high elevations

Good adivse Dockboy.
I sometimes forget all the options.
Crowley can be dangerous though when the weather is up like that. Float tubing in that kind of wind is dangerous (learned my lesson the hard way, that's why I now own a Watermaster and PAC800).

Why would you have good luck at Gull when June is still too cold?

Thanks for the GREAT pics!

I didn't fully understand, but I know they had a huge mud slide 2 years ago which virtually destroyed the place. It's looking very good now but for some reason the DFG has decided to use other hatcheries for their fish.

I'm not sure about that. June is much bigger and a lot more windy. I think we just found where the stockers were schooling at Gull.

You should get up there soon Patrick.

Thanks LW. I'm really looking forward to getting up there again in a few weeks.

Thanks for the advice. I thought about driving over to Crowley, but one of the guys doesn't like fishing big water and the other doesn't like fast water. We just stuck it out on Friday and dealt with the wind.

Great job out there!!!! If the wind did not come up you would of probably really took it to em!!! It's too bad about Mt. Whitney, it's a beautiful hatchery with lots of history. Even Oak Creek itself used to be a tremendous fishery prior to its poisoning due to Whirling Disease.
