I've been targeting corbina lately and am having some trouble with them. They are extremely skittish, and I am going crazy trying to figure them out. The setup I've been using is a carolina setup with 6# backer, 1 oz weight, 4# florocarbon leader about 2' long, size 10 mosquito hook, and a sand crab about 1/2" or so in size. I know where they are holding in the surf, and am casting parallel to the beach on to another sand crab bed where I let it sit untill the line becomes horribly twisted and knotted or a perch eats it. What am I doing wrong? Would a drop shot setup work better? Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. 187

try using softshell crabs, and no need for 1oz weight, your fishin in the skinny. use a 1/2oz weight.

They are the toughest fish to catch from the surf. However, they can be caught, just have to put the time in and learn from your experiences.

Good luck.

187fish,
As you found Corbina are very hard to catch. Your setup sounds right but I would suggest using a SMALL black swivel to help prevent the line from twisting so bad. I like black because it does not reflect light which can cause flashes which in turn could also spook Corbina. For sand crabs, try to find the ones with eggs aka orange stuff on them. Finally, were light colored cloths like tans and light blues that will actually blend in with your background.

Other Corbina baits to try: Ghost Shrimp, In Keepers, Lug/Blood Worms & Mussel.

Good Luck and Keep Trying.

try a slightly longer leader as well, i myself use a 3 foot 6# flouro tippit leader, slightly smaller diameter than your typical flouro leaders. also, maybe a smaller weight too, i use a 1/4 oz. weight.
