Washington (CNN) -- The federal government has shut down fishing in more of the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the massive oil spill there, a government official said Tuesday.

a true shame. Hopefully some insight and/or wisdom can be gleaned from this tragedy and applied for the benefit of our grandchildren...

I agree. Henceforth I will only purchase gas from ethical companies. Where to begin....

Chevron / Texaco? Killing Ecuadorans and the rainforest big time. Spilled in CA, and they also still keep the Burmese regime in power.

Exxon / Mobil? That's a no brainer.

Conoco / Circle K / Unocal? Besides my stock underperforming and they used to be buds with El Presidente Chavez, I think they managed to pollute Peru pretty well. Earlier Lousiana spill too?

Shell? Thank you for the superfund site, and they are keeping a crooked Nigerian govt in power.

Occidental? local boys. Pulled out of Peru a while ago and left it an environmental dump.

BP (amoco, am/pm, arco): Louisiana!

Costco? They buy from everybody, so you are essentially supporting all the "bad guys"....but their $1.50 hot dog-n-coke is killer.

I think this summer (wow, coincidentally tuna season!) I will strive to buy my gas henceforth from Pemex. No problemos there....(grin).

Have I left anyone out, can't think of anyone else....come to think of it, every single oil company is evil. Ride a bike is the only solution that comes to mind. Certainly don't join the Army if you have any ethical reservations against oil. LOL!

It just ticks me off that many these companies have had record profits in the past couple years (when I mean "record", I mean all time most profitable in the history of US business!) and yet we still have mass oil spill disasters.

What chance at success do you think the attempt to raise the damages cap will have? It is my understanding that it is presently 75 million (and I believe I heard somewhere that BP had profits of several billion in the first quarter or two this year)

I fully realize that as a driver of a combustion engine motor car I am part of the problem, but it certainly seems as though petro-companies could shoulder a tad more responsibility themselves especially when they F something up this badly...

CD,

The thing is, we can have as high of a cap as we want. All you have to do is up the tax that goes in to the trust fund. Bottomline: you and I pay for BP's mess. It's as if the legislators never attended a first year class in torts. Classic Ford Pinto (gastank explosion) cost-benefit analysis. Inherent problem with capping anything.....I also point my finger at the Supreme Court's infinite wisdom in capping punitive damages in America. (if you recall that was a pivotal point with the Exxon debacle.)

My first impression is to fight fire with fire. If it appears at first to be a catastrophic spill, promptly seize or nationalize the company (or enough assets to reasonably cover actual and prospected damages), it's subsidiaries and direct owner's assets. For those who seek to minimize liability by only operating on an limited liability charter and/or keep main assets overseas, do not certify them unless they execute enforceable contracts to turn over assets in the advent of a national/global disaster as determined by a neutral 3rd party. Keep the fund in place to cover or make-up the difference for the smaller operators who's whole value wouldn't cover damages. Companies will always continue to sell to us.

Likely scenario: BP will litigate and point the finger at it's contractors (they almost have to as a duty to their shareholders), and the ever increasingly burdened American taxpayer will pay for this too. Oh, and our gas prices will go up AFTER the elections (regardless of who the next elected dolt will be) to cover the cost of increased governmental regulation. No one will go to jail, well, except for the shrimp fisherman who decides to burn a BP gas station.

Bitter taxpayer? Nah, not me. I just love reading fish reports from the unemployed....ha ha!!

I know, right? I'm waiting for Sansou to rip off his "Cheney, Gingrich '08" t-shirt to reveal a "Nader, Chomskey '08" tanktop.

I know, I know....nationalization. It's sooooooo un-American.

Wouldn't it be cool though if the government actually turned a profit on something, and then in return was legislatively mandated to lower your taxes? The mind explodes with possibilities of further military adventurism....say, invade Iran, have Uncle Sam take their oil, turn an even bigger profit, and now pay each US citizen a dividend!

Besides, isn't TARP a water downed form of nationalization? (except for the part where Obama is buying crap paper, instead of something wildly profitable, like, uh, OIL?)

Well, that's one idea... however, I personally feel that if the US of A should get into a business - it should get into the "dippin' sauce" industry. Strong consumer demand, unlimited potential for growth... and to be frank, if federal employees were to perform like, well, federal employees you'd only be looking at the destruction of a few Blumin' Onions or Sausage Poppers instead of entire ecosystems. I'm just saying. Additionally, this is a business which is tailor-made for American ingenuity... I mean look at all we have accomplished in this field already.

Oil is fine but Honey Chipoltle Mustard Ring Sting Wing Zing is American.

Yeah. The earth should just pull up its bootstraps and take care of itself.

Its about time these animals began lifting a finger and start helping with the cleanup.

I can live with the federal government nationalizing the condiment business. I would enjoy a subsidized cheap bloomin' onion.

But I steadfastly am opposed to the Feds nationalizing the pornography business.....what with all the rules about giving the job to the "lowest bidder" and all. Me thinks no bueno.

WTH is a "cingulate sulcus", and why would I want to remove it? Is that worth anything on eBay?
