I’ve been wanting to learn how to fish from a kayak for the last couple of years, but never found the time or got around to it. JerryG was generous enough to offer to teach me on one of his extra kayaks. Jerry is a veteran kayaker and has been fishing on one for years. I couldn’t have found a more qualified instructor to get me started and guide me on this new adventure. Not only that I had Jerry to show me the ropes… I also had two other experienced kayak fishermen coming along to make sure my maiden voyage went as smoothly as possible. Chris (Tr0psn4j) and Jonathan (ToadsToadsOnly) also came along provided additional guidance and support. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of Wingmen on the water… I knew that I was in good hands. :Big Grin:

Conditions: Low tide at the LZ (launching zone). Fishing the kelp beds. Flat to moderate swells. Overcast and cool weather. Excellent water clarity with a strong baitfish presence.

Techniques:
Various swim baits, Dropshotting plastics, throwing various hard baits.

Fish count – Numerous Calico Bass and Sand Bass for everybody (all released).

I caught a Calico on my first cast from the yak… what a good omen.

I have never step foot on a kayak before… and was both nervous & excited prior to launch. It was beginner’s luck as I was near flawless on both the initial launch into the surf and on the beach landing at the end… WHEW! I have to admit, there were some anxious moments there as a wave broke right behind me on the landing and I had to dig the paddle into the surf to stay straight and upright.

Special thanks to Jerry and Chris for your demonstration of how “NOT” to launch from the beach.
I will let one of you guys tell the story. LOL

Here are some of our adventure pics… enjoy.

What a RUSH! I had a great time and really enjoyed my first kayaking experience. Time to start searching for the right yak and all the custom goodies. As fun as it was to fish from a kayak, surf fishing will still be my first choice, my first love.

Jerry, I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to teach me the ABC’s of kayak fishing. The preparation that you walked me through was superb. I felt educated and well informed and by the time I step foot on that kayak, I was comfortable and believed that I was prepared enough to handle anything. Not only you are one of the coolest person I’ve ever met, you are a great friend as well, thanks again for everything.

Jonathan, thanks for letting me follow your lead. I watched you very carefully as you launched from the beach and followed suit. Also, for showing me how to work the kelp properly. Your fishing knowledge and experience is quite amazing. Someday, I would like to try some of the things that you have already mastered. We will do this again very soon!

Chris, once I get enough practice and my own kayak, we’ll head out on there on a regular basis… alternating from the surf and yak. Nothing will be beyond our reach anymore! Thanks for all your help and support today. I appreciate your friendship and we’ll hit the Northern sand together in the next couple of weeks. Oh yeah… and I double dare you! :Big Smile:

Until the next S.W.A.T. adventure, have fun and be safe out there everybody!

Arthur (Wingnut)

“As you go through life, you will get many opportunities to make a difference. Take advantage of all of them.”

Parting shot.
Surf fishing one day… kayaking the next?!? I’m worn out just hearing you talk about it…

Bonus Surf Report – Northern Mop Up Mission 5/15/10… The “Legals” have Landed!

Since my plans to head North to fish Lake San Antonio with Bob (TroutOnly) fell through at the last minute, I decided to hit the surf instead. Roy (Q3fishboy) joined me in the surf and met a couple of new friends in the surf and got reacquainted with an old one.

More positive signs of the Flatties starting their late spawn… it can only get better from here!

Uh oh… 22 ½”. Mike, I think I only trail you by one or two legals…
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Wingnut%206/Picture002-29.jpg

Roy got a nice 26” legal Hali. His first on the Lucky Craft… Are you a believer now Roy? Lol

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Wingnut%206/CIMG40011.jpg

Met a couple of really nice guys on the sand and fished with them for a couple of hours. Future FNN / Team 57 members.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Wingnut%206/Picture004-26.jpg

Ran into an old friend… Mark and his buddy Ken was there when I caught a couple of Coho (Silver) Salmon from the surf on Memorial Day a couple of years back. Really good to see and talk to you again Mark. I will give you a call the next time we head back up your way.
Face blurred out to protect the innocent… just joking, damn water spot.

It's pretty nerve-wracking the first time, but very rewarding.

With a kayak you can access harder-to-reach spots, and really feel the strength and fight in a fish.

I'm planning on getting a kayak later this year. I need to get into one of those 60 pound white seabass

Not too shabby for a first time. If I were to give a tip about surf launches, it would be to stow all your gear inside your kayak. Even on the smallest of days, a wave can catch you off guard at any time. Can't save your embarrassment, but will spare you your gear.

As far as kayak suggestion, I think you're looking for a Hobie. A bit pricey, but the pedaldrive's speed is priceless especially getting in and out of the surf. I have Jerry's Cobra Marauder and it is a great yak as well, however, kind of heavy and long.

Very Cool. Getting my license this summer, so I'll be seeing you around Arthur. We should team up and take Steve out on his turf.

Yakking without fishing equipment made me nervous the first time I tried it, I can only imagine how it would feel dumping my stuff overboard. I have no idea how guys get yellows on those things...
Damn Roy hooked up for sure. Saw him on the pier Sat. afternoon and he was himhaaainnn for a short while and then proceeded to show pic's and tell me the story. I think hes hooked on the LC for sure.

Somehow I see a Hobie kayak with the Mirage Drive in your future Arthur! Kayak fishing looks like a lot of fun. Maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days, but for now I'm waiting for the surf bite to pick up. Mike and I found one patch of great looking water that should be holding in the near future. Then I took some water over my head and decided some warm food sounded good. Congrats on a good day on the water, and looking forward to when we next hit the surf!

About the vote, let's see if we can vote to reduce your rank back down to S.W.A.T. recruit... and send you back to basic training to learn how to tie a proper knot. You can fish every day of the week, but I have Poseidon on my side.

Congrats on your first successful kayak outing. Never really fished the kelp before but it looks like it could be rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Nice goin on all the bass. When you finally get a yak those flat boys are gonna be in serious trouble.
Yeah Jason, it only took one big fish that wrap me up in the kelp for me to realize that you either muscle them away from the kelp or they're gone. I really learned a lot in just one session and will continue to get better with each trip out there.

That's the way to mix it up. WTG
Yakity Yak, Don't look back. Ready for some 60 lb class Yellowtail next ?
Next session 'High surf launching' practice and wave riding ?

DR
Martin, one of my goals on this first trip was to catch a Calico that was at least 5 lbs. I know that I had at least two fish of this caliber. The first one took me straight into the kelp and the second one popped off right next to the yak as I reached down to thumb its lower jaw.
The wave riding thing on the yak looks like fun, but I don't think I'll be launching in those conditions anytime soon.

Wingnut,

Once you go yak - you'll never go back

You may be right Nick, but it would take a lot of persuading to take me completely away from the sand. I'm sure I'll run into some of the KFM members on the water one of these days. I've always waved at you guys from the beach, but hope to fish along side with you someday.
By the way... this is one heck of a catch, congrats! :Envious:
And you have the yak that I want!

What an awsome trip. Thanks for the report Arthur.
It was an awesome trip and a really fun report to write. :Big Grin:

Yakking without fishing equipment made me nervous the first time I tried it, I can only imagine how it would feel dumping my stuff overboard. I have no idea how guys get yellows on those things...
Damn Roy hooked up for sure. Saw him on the pier Sat. afternoon and he was himhaaainnn for a short while and then proceeded to show pic's and tell me the story. I think hes hooked on the LC for sure.
I've read in books & magazines, seen videos and heard stories of some amazing fish being caught on a kayak and thinking, someday it will be my turn! :Envious:
Roy has come a long way since I fished with him for the first time a couple of years ago. I knew that it was just a matter of time until he start coming around to believing in the LCs.

Hey Arthur, Taylor Tackle got some nice yaks for sale with all the bells and whistles, check them out. It's about time you took that leap, thanks for taking us thru your first yak experience.
I've seen some of those yaks in there before Vince, pretty nice. But I got some hook-ups that can get me killer deals on everything I need for kayak fishing.

I will take my time and get one that is right for me Marc. The Hobie Revolution is definitely the front runner right now. Too bad you guys didn't do better this weekend... I was so confident that you guys would kill it out there. Always the next time... see you soon!

Arthur, always happy reading your reports. I live vicarously through them. Time for another surf event......OFG
Thanks Chris... always happy to share my adventures with my FNN family. Not sure when the next surf event will be, but I've been thinking about it... Take care and I hope all is well.

wow, what a fun report to read, looks like you got to learn from some great teachers.
Coming out to meet poseidon himself right bro? Be careful out there and keep up the fine job.
You sure know how to live.
I had the best instructors! i have to admit, it was pretty cool playing on Poseidon's turf.

Art, i can't even keep up with you anymore.
Looks like alot of fun, i might have to hit up Jerry for a lesson myself.
Very cool of Jerry, Chris and Jonathan to make sure that our Commander gets back from the mission in one piece. Glad to hear that the flatties are starting to wake up. I have to try and get some time off to join you guys on a few missions soon.
Have fun slaying Stripers with your niece this weekend Art.
I'm sure that it would be cool with Jerry if you want to come next time Phuong.
Yeah, she's all excited for her annual Striper Kill mission with Uncle Bob. :Big Grin:

Always looking for new methods of embellishing your fishing habits Arthur. If/when you come out on the boat, I promise you won't have to put your waders on. JK Cali's are fun to catch in the kelp.
Just expanding my horizon Mikey.. we only live once my friend. :Big Grin: Looking forward to fishing with yu again, whether on the boat or on the sand.
BTW - Did you get my package?

good to hear the legals have landed let the fun begin  to bad you didnt fall in the water on the kayak :Rolls Eyes: jk jk lol super sweet to fish on a kayak and hit those kelp beds gotta love it. Great report.
I actually expected to get wet Brandon... but I was very lucky to stay relatively dry.
Hopefully, the Flatties will continue coming in on a regular basis.

Thanks for the great report! I was looking forward to this outing since we last hit the surf at DR Beach!

Looks like you had some great company for your maiden voyage!

It is good to see the new possibilities for our assaults on the salt! You and the new team can work and herd the bait and big flatties into the shallows for us onshore part of the team to score! It is all about teamwork!

Did every one look at you in surprise when you started belting out the "Star Spangled Banner" :EyePop:

Great job Jerry, Chris, & Jonathan for popping Arthur's Cherry! I am sure Yuri will be disapointed!

See you guys out on the home front soon!

Steve
Teamwork... that sounds like a good plan Steve, we'll hit them from all angles.
I thought for sure that you will either be hitting the surf with Mike & Marc, or in your playground last weekend. See you soon my friend.

As I was reading your report, I had this weird feeling that you were going to hit the surf after wards. I scrolled down and I was right.. Good job bass'in fellas.
I actullay hit the surf on Saturday and the kayak on Sunday. It was a funfilled weekend, that's for sure. Nice job out there tubing the NPH with Jason.

No, that's not a problem at all Tim. The only problem I had was I kept clipping the back up rods in the rod holders behind me from time to time when I cast. I had to shift them to one side after awhile... a good way to break a rod tip or something.
I don't think you would like kayaking very much... not so many Perch out there.

Until the next S.W.A.T. adventure, have fun and be safe out there everybody!

Arthur (Wingnut)

Lets get a "SWAT" vote!

That's it....I'm fishing four more times than YOU this week!!!

It was a pleasure fishing with you again Arthur.

And nice meeting you guys Jerry and Jonathon. If you guys want to kayak again, let me know. :)

Arthur,

Thank you Arthur. Thank you for your friendship and inspiration. Very well done my friend. I was watching the marine weather forecasts closely all last week as we planned the yak attack mission and although the conditions were not too bad it was a little rougher than I had hoped for but you stepped up to the challenge and hit it out of the park on your first at bat. Let the truth be known everyone Arthur caught the first 5 fish and that set the pace for the rest of the day. He stayed way ahead of the pack as he continued to catch fish all day. I had a great time out there. Thanks guys (Jonathan, Chris, Arthur). Many more adventures to come my friends. Looking forward to it.

Mike, Phuong, Steve, Marc, Lucas – So who is in for the next yak attack mission? I wish you guys could have joined us out there.

Oh yeah and Bones that wipe out was the result of a sneaker rogue my friend. Had I been aboard my yak I would have punched through that wave. I was using my dad’s yak which is an unfamiliar vessel. Oh well what can I say it happens sometimes. LOL

I think Poseidon was favoring me a little bit as it was my first time out on his turf.
I know that you probably spent more time keeping an eye on me than you really did concentrate on fishing Jerry and I appreciate that very much.
I'm going to try and talk the rest of the S.W.A.T. Crew to learn how to yak... imagine an armada of water assault vehicles invading the kelp beds.
Let's plan another session soon, I need the practice! :Big Grin:

Lol, I remember that Dana. It was my first Fred Hall Show. I couldn't wait for you any longer buddy, had to finally try it out for myself. Don't worry about the weight capacity or stability, I have the kayak for you. It's the Hobie Pro Angler... very nice and super stable. I will probably get either the Revolution or the Outback model. Da boyz are worried that I might not walk the beach with them again, but I will never give up fishing from the sand. Like I told them, I'd rather catch a legal Halibut from the surf than anywhere else. But there's nothing wrong with broadening one's horizon...
I'm really looking forward to the High Sierra's event next month as I need the rest & relaxation big time.
Have you guys picked a place for the BBQ yet? Plenty of room at my pad and a six burner grill all ready to go.
