The past few weeks Trollmeister and I have been hitting up DVL to see if we can find some of the quality catfish we were able to catch last season at about this time from the Jewel. Sorry we haven’t been posting but Team Trolltoon got a little lazy with the posts so we figured we’d compile some pics from the past few weeks we’ve been after the cats starting in April. We’ve seen quite a few weather and temperature changes from then until now and have seen where the fish have been on the move but for the most part with a little patience and persistence we’ve been able to find a few very nice cats.
Like always fishing with Trolly is a laugh a minute but, the highlight of the past few weeks had to be yesterday. Toward the end of the day Trolly and I decided to end the day at the spot we started fishing at earlier in the morning where Trolly, who had the hot stick for the day, got a nice channel that weighed in at a little over 11 pounds and I got my only fish for the day after farming my first two. We fished for about two hours and were thinking we were going to have to give it up once the wind came up. We decided to give it about another half hour so I decided to reel in and re-bait. I cut two premium chunks of mackerel and had then sitting on the cutting board ready to go but once I reached for them they were gone! My good bud Trolly decided that while I was retying my hooks he’d better make good use of those two pieces of bait. Well, I guess he made the right decision because before I could get two more cut he had a fish on. This one turned out to be the big one for the day at 12.2 pounds. All I could do this last half hour was farm my last two fish of the day.
Shortly after I lost my last fish Trolly had re-baited and had his rods sitting on the edge of the boat. Now, as long as I have been fishing with Trolly I’ve been getting on him about not using rod holders. I keep telling him he’s going to lose another rod. He’s lost two since we’ve been fishing together so I guess he’s just not going to learn. Well, we were sitting there B.S.ing as usual and all of a sudden Trollys rod slams the side of the boat, jumps over the rail and the last we saw of it the rod took off to the deep like a torpedo. Goodbye baitrunner! I looked at Trolly and said “I told you this was going to happen!” Trolly sat there with a look of shock in his face and then all we could after that was laugh.
We decided that we’d better call it a day and decided to cut our losses and get home so I grabbed my rods and brought them in. As Trolly was reeling in his last and only baitrunner set up he has left he yelled out to me, “I’ve got one!” I thought to myself there was no way after he kicked my tail all day that he could have a fish! Trolly told me that it sure wasn’t fighting very hard but it was heavy. Then out of nowhere the tip of Trollys rod he lost just a few minutes earlier came out of the water! I reached down and there it was, complete with Trollys baitrunner! All I can say is lucky for Trolly he didn’t have a fish on the end of that one!
On our way home we stopped in to see some of our Team 57 Friends at the 24 hour Event at SARL and it was fun getting to see some Good Friends having such a good time on the water. Dana, Donna, Arthur, Rich, Art and the rest of Team 57 it was good to see all of you and I hope you all did well last night.
Trolly, all I can say is, like usual it’s been a blast fishing the past few weeks with you and I’m looking forward to more. Thanks again My Friend!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
I have to mention too that on the last two trips we ran into a couple of the original trout trollers from the good ole days when leadcore, downriggers and P-Stick lures were the hot item. First was Diamondbear, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet on or off the water and second just this weekend we ran into Husker Rod cruising the lake in his new boat. He too is a great guy to talk with. It was great seeing both of you!
Here’s a few pics of some of the DVL cats we’ve picked up the last few weeks……..
