Day 1

Went out for a short morning tube session with Ren714. Fishing was a little slow at first, but it picked up quickly in the end. Most of the fish caught were on the swimmie and a few on the DS. Total fish count between the both of us was around 20 or so mixed variety of sandies and spotties.

Here's a few pics of some of the better fish. Ren714 also caught some nicer models that were taken on his cam.

Day 2 Mothers Day

All this talk about tubing, it was finally time for Tess to see what the hype was all about.
So we borrowed a tube and some flippers and off we went.

Since it was her first time, I wanted to spend the day to help her get familiar with the tube and how to move around in it and not so much on fishing. I even experimented with a new jig for the heck of it.

Enjoy the pics.

Wind started to pick up so we called it a day at around noon time. It was blowin so hard we had to get off the tubes and hike our way back to the truck. Other than the wind it was a good day of tubing.

Our trial/experimental day turned out to be a pretty decent day of fishing. Ended up with a mixed bag of close to 20 spotties, sandies, butts, a wsb and a bat ray that nearly dragged Tess out the the middle of the channel. Not bad for her first time on the tube.

Til next time

Nice going getting Tesser in the tube.
Tess, make sure to check the shark sightings/attacks first, prior to tubing.

Been alot of shak action lately. See Below.

Balboa Pier — On April 27, 2010 Dena Files reported the following; “ I live in Balboa and frequently walk the beach and pier and wanted to submit a report about two deceased mammals that may have fallen victim to a shark. It was 8:00PM the night of Saturday, April 17, 2010, when I observed this dead seal that had washed up on the beach in front of the fire pits just North of the Balboa Pier, which is one of two piers located in the city of Newport Beach. Additionally, on Friday night, April 16, 2010, while on the pier I do remember a seal that briefly pop it's head out of the water a couple of times and it was directly under the pier in between the pillars. It seemed it stayed within that area during the time I was there. Its actions seemed odd to me at the time. Then April 27, 2010, I observed a dead dolphin. It was almost in the exact same location from where the seal was located, instead of the fire pits it was just out from the parking lot.” Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Excellent job to the 3 of you Jason!
That's alot of fish for 2 days with a plethora of species.
That one shot of Tess is hilarious, is that the ray that pulled her?
Thanks for the reports and pics,

Thanks everyone! I was really nervous for my first time on the tube... I wasn't sure if I'd be able to control it with the wind/current and I did NOT want to FEEL ANYTHING touch my legs or feet. (That's the real reason it took me a while to give it a try.) Plus sea lions freak me out and the thought of hungry creepy sea creatures lurking around (besides spotties and halis of course, hehe) just waiting to take a bite outta my leg. :EyePop: But since Jason's been going consistently and he is still intact, I grew a pair and went for it. And I think I did pretty darn good for my first time... I didn't fall out or get eaten! :Envious:

So now it looks like I'm in the market for a tube. Jason's Fish Cat was a little too big for me... I felt like I was too high off the water and I had to work harder cauz I have short legs, lol. But I loved the stability. Any suggestions???

Hey Tess, where's the pink rod?!?

Jason wouldn't let me bring my pink rod! He was afraid I'd drop it in the water if I lost control of the tube and I'd cry. But I do admit, I would've cried. But I didn't so next time for sure.

LOL that was a funny shot! He was coming in nice and easy at first then all of a sudden he dipped my rod tip and Jason snapped the pic. It wasn't the ray though, it was an 18" hali.

Good Times! :Fishing Catch:

Tess, did Jason tell you that there are sharks in the harbor? =D
I personally like sitting above the water. Check out the Caddis pro 2000 it's a pretty sweet tube.
I'm checking my schedule right now to see if we can pull another session this weekend, Jason.

I am truly sorry that my boat hauler decided to go south and need some tender loving care and I had to pospone our reunion for a second time. I guess it was just mad that I give more care to the "Spotted Fever" than I do to her! But sometimes very hard decisions have to be made and our true friends understand !

I am glad to see that some alternative plans work for you & Jason! I was looking forward to the day that you finally decided to give the Float Tube a try and am really jellous now that you have the a new advantage in the harbor!

I only own a pair of Eddie's hand me down "Pink Arm Floaties" to tread the water!

By the way! I have a missle lock on Dockrats house if you ever want him taken out!

It was bad enough to get hauled around by a Big Ray!

Congrats on a sucessful day out there!

I will give you some more dates here soon to try and make some plans again!

Tubing is a lot of fun. You should give it a try. Your half way there with the waders. All you need is a tube and some fins.

great tube slay guys, keep up the sweet reports

Thanks. We've been fortunate to have some decent fishing days lately.

Nice tubing sessions! Jason getting jiggy... nice.
Hey Tess, where's the pink rod?!?

Yeah it was time to try something new and I'm glad I did. I usually switch back to the good ol swimmie when something new hasn't produced within the first hour. I think I'll be getting jiggy more often.

LOL I advised Tess to leave the pink rod at home on her first tubing venture. Didn't want to chance dropping her precious rod into the water to provide new structure for the spotties. She would not be a happy tuber... and neither would I.

Well done it looks you had great time. Thanks for the report.

Thanks we had a blast. Too bad you couldn't make it out to the Mother's Day SWAT outing. I'm sure you'll make it out on the next assault.

Thanks Dan. I know a lot of guys use jigs, but I've never had the patience for them until now. I'm glad I finally gave them a try.

She's totally aware of the shark situation. As a matter of fact she caught a nice smooth hound on our last NPH trip.

Robert that is my favorite pic. Unfortunately, I paid for it by getting soaked trying to land the fish. Just did not want to give up.

Damn, I'm on call this weekend. :Crying: I may go out on friday though if work doesn't need me.

I think the Fish Cat sits too high for Tess. Her fins would splash like crazy everytime she kicked. She had a difficult time trying to stay stealthy when approaching the docks.
I think she might have been better off in the cheapy tube I was in.

The pair I lost was my cheap pair, but was my favorite because they fit me the best. The pair I’m wearing now are my expensive ones. Can’t afford to lose them on another hookset.

Can’t wait to see a tube report from you. Oh yeah, we were fishing the island.

Hey Steve no worries. We totally understand that things happen. Although tubing doesn’t compare to fishing aboard the Spotted Fever, we still had a lot of fun out there.

I was quite impressed with Tess’s float tubing abilities. It was a fun new experience for her and I had a lot of fun just watching her catch fish from the tube.

We’ll all get together again when the time is right. It’s a must. Tess has been wanting to show off her new rod.

BTW maybe she can borrow Eddie’s pink arm floaties to match her pink rod or...

I guess you could use a small smoothhound for bait. Use a 14/0 hook and nosehook a 2' smoothhound for bait.

The good news is that the chances of getting 'taken out' are higher driving to NPH in a car than getting bit from below.

Catching GWS from shore is fun, but in a float tube that would be a real heck of a ride.

Great whites off Newport Beach: photos from 2002
April 26th, 2008, 11:15 am · 11 Comments · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer
Check out these insane photos of great white sharks munching on a dead blue whale taken by Newport Beach lifeguard Brent Jacobsen in 2002.

As you’ve probably heard by now, a man was killed yesterday just south of Orange County in Solana Beach by a great white as he trained with a group of other swimmers for a triathlon.

First let me say – my deepest condolences to Dr. David Martin’s family. If you missed the story we wrote, check it out here.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about great whites off our shore here in Orange County. One guy from Manhattan Beach said his surfboard got nailed by one at Dog Beach in Huntington, and an expert confirmed that it was indeed a great white that bit into it. Read my interview with him here.

Lifeguards dismissed that claim as unverified.

Jacobsen said he was just a few feet from the shark as he snapped the photos. I would have been freaking out. Here’s how he described it:

” The most remarkable part of the experience was witnessing the shark’s speed. As we towed the whale carcass seaward, we would periodically stop to make sure the sharks followed. We would see the great white up to a quarter mile behind the whale, then in what seemed like only seconds it was hitting the whale. It did this through out the early evening. An almost full moon let us see the sharks after dark.”

These 2002 photos out of Newport show that they have indeed been out there – especially if we put out a meal for them. Big thanks to Sean Collins, chief forecaster of Surfline.com, for giving us a head’s up about the photos.

Will this shark attack keep you out of the water?

Cool report!

What kind of jig are you using, flipping, football or swimming? Are you using any trailers?

Have you thrown a chatterbait? Sometimes when the fish aren't hitting the swimmie or the jig I'll throw a chatterbait. Sometimes that is my secret lure that get them to react.

Love that expression on Tess's face... uh oh!!!!.... phew, just a hali!!

P.S. I hear that sharks really enjoy dock rats as a snack!.... dock rat, wharf rat... same thing :)

Not sure what kind of jig it is. It's just a jig that's all I know. LOL.

Haven't heard of people throwing the chatterbait. I've thrown a spinnerbait into eel grass a few times with no success . I always have a difficult time straying away from my usual DS or swimmie. Using the jig was the first time I used a different lure all day.

That's my favorite picture. We were expecting to hookup with a flattie sooner or later with all the baitfish and warm water. When she first caught a glimpse that it was a hali and saw her rod dip down into the water we both thought may it could have been a legal. It sure fought like one anyway.
