Headed up to Kernville on Saturday to try out Fishin Magician's recomondations on the high flow trout action in the area. Flows are indeed up, filling up the lake so much that the lower kern will be running through Bakersfield for a while, water is also being diverted to the Friant (spelling) canal to the river between coffee rd and allen rd. My brother has a apt by the river, and was in the river bed when the water started flowing, he said fish were running, from pool to pool as the river filled up.
Back to Kerville, pulled up the park and it was packed so cruising though town I think I saw Fishing Magician in his river duds crossing the street at the bridge. We were heading the other way, so sorry we didnn't stop to say hi. We found a road just past the golf course that heads to the river, and parked. The fishing in that area was not up to par, so I head upstream to some holes just past the park.http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4572352376_28d5a31e67_b.jpg

All fish came of Red,White and Blue, PB with three small bb splitshots for weight. First fish came on about a foot off the bank, the rest came on the bottom slow drifted. Nailed about 20 fish in an hour, all released safely, not gut hooks thankfully. The new rod I picked up from Big Five for $17 bucks worked great, have to admit this is the first new rod and reel that I actually caught fish on the first time out.

Great job on the fish. sounds like a good day. I hear you on the crowds. It was a real busy weekend. I was rafting all weekend so there is a good chance you did see me. We had a group of 100 special needs children to run down saturday making for a long day. Made a few dollars in tips today for some new jigs. While rafting I couldn't believe how many fish were being caught. There were a lot of happy fishermen. Enough talking I'm going out back and catch me a trout.

A buddy and I fished in front of the trailer park there by the bridge and caught as many as we wanted on Thomas Buoyants. They were all pretty small though. Released them all.

They were all small, the largest was about 12 inches. I hear rumors of the trout in the lake around this time pulling up into the river at the mouth to spawn, the locals are very quiet about it, all I hear of is a small one week window to hit the spawn. With all the baitfish in the lake, there has to be some huge holdovers.

You are absolutely right about the lake fish. Look for them when the river flow reaches 3,000cfs. Look at the last column http://www.spk-wc.usace.army.mil/cgi-bin/hr_rep.pl?isb%20Isabella We fished the mouth of the river near the old cemetary 3 years ago for over a week solid. We were throwing 2lb'ers back like they were 8" stockers. Caught at least 1 fish every day over 6lbs with 2 at 8lbs. These are holdover, shad eating, hook jawed, sharp teeth fish. Hook one on 4Lb test and it's over.We learned real quick. Only time I can remember fishing trout on 8lb test.

Thanks for the report.
Heading up there this weekend.

Whats the water temp on the upper Kern right now?
Are people innertubing yet?
I'll have some nonfishermen with me that will need to be entertained.

Water temp=COLD under 40, it was snow yesterday
Are people tubing yet? Hell no. Big water and rising. Don't expect tubing flows until late July.
Entretainment= Rafting, Hiking, Museum, shopping or my favorite, Kern River Brewing Company
