Thanks for the report Ron.
The winds have just been ugly lately, I can't wait till we get a full week of 70+ weather and the water to get at least 65 degrees.
Am looking forward to the tuna season!

Hi Murreita angler,

Boy are my reports BORING compared to threads like fishbones. :( Oh well, guess I gotta get out and fish more. On the temps ... it starts to warm up to 62 and then here comes the winds to knock the temp down 3 degrees in 24 hours !! Crazy but so far it's happend 3 times in the last 30 days.

Hi Rich and Noah,

Ya, 5 anglers and the crew. Lots of room to fish. I have the starboard stern corner and the current is going parallel to the stern and out to my left. So what do 3 guys do ..... of course they hug the stern and drop straight down from the stern which eventually goes right into my line (braid which has properly fully extended out in the direction of the drift) and tangles me. Everybody knows the rule is the guy closest to the direction of the line has priority and others on the stern need to go to the starboard rail. Not these jokers ! Luckyly, the deck can unravel the mess without disaster without cutting my line but that's what I had to deal with so I just quit fishing !! Tough to have idiots for fishin' buddies !! That and 300 feet of water ..... did it for me and I quit.

Hi That and 300 feet of water .....

JapanRon

Hi Ron, Must of been offshore of the west end Shoe ?
I thought most of The Shoe was 80' to 120' ?

I hadn't fished it much usually hit PV or the wall.

Quick Horseshoe Story;

A friend of mine was scuba diving the Shoe and found a cool brass pot.
On the boat his buddies checked it out and decided it was a Ash Urn from a funeral.
They told him he had to toss it back in or face bad karma. So he tossed it back overboard.

Hi DockRat,

Thanks for the reply and great story. Historically, I believe HS Kelp covered a lot of territory. Some of the charts we see today designate the 'Shoe' as kind of an oval area that is quite large. I'll post that chart in one of my next reports. Your term 'most' seems appropriate but lots of fringe areas waaay deeper.

Ron et al--

The wind isn't just a PITA for shore area anglers--it has been DOGMATIC out here in BFE as well. Thanks also for your confirmation that NOAA predictions are often optimistic and conservative concerning sea conditions--esp. as to swell and wave periods. I am all about getting the boat in the salt ASAP, but that Perfect Storm bit in a 17-footer is not much fun.

Hi flytyingreloader,

I think I'm beginning to understand what a crap-shoot it is when trying to predict the marine weather in our L.A. and surrounding area. When one considers that there's never the same conditions for any 30 minute segiment of a 6 hour fishing period, I'm surprised they can make predictions that are as close as they come. Make a note next time you're out of big changes NOT caused by simply moving the boat to a different area. Almost laughable !! Dang wind kills the surface water temp every time it gets to 62 !! Grrr

Hi pokerface12,

Sounds great. If I remember correctly, you were fishing the Pursuit big-time last season. Look forward to those reports on Catalina fishing. Might even do a couple of trips myself.
