FNN'ers,
I have a question.
If I remember correctly there are certain lakes in Cali. that will no longer allow 2 stroke motors on the water because of having to mix the oil with the gas (correct)?
Am I in the right ballpark or am I way out of bed here.
Any and all info is appreciated.
Thx,
KH

You're correct! Many public lakes require a 4 stroke engine. But just call the lake before you head out. I see your location is Orange County, I go to Irvine lake with my 2 stroke and theres no problem there.

The issue with older 2-stroke engines is not the mixing of oil with the gas, it's the discharge of up to 20-30% of unburnt fuel into the air and water. This is a large source of pollution for lakes and particularly reservoirs. Note that there are newer technology 2-stroke "direct injection" motors (Optimax, DFI, TLDI, etc.) that run just as clean as 4-stroke engines. Look for a sticker with 1-3 stars on the cowling of the motor.
Most lakes in CA still allow 2-stroke engines of any flavor. DVL, Skinner, and Lake Tahoe most notably DO NOT allow the older 2-strokes.
