I am going to the Mammoth Lakes area on May20th-29th. I will be posting pictures and reports when I get back. I hope the weather warms up a little to stimulate the trout inot feeding.. The water has got to be in the low 40's or high 30's right now at the ice-free lakes....

I will be at PVR on Friday by 8:00 am. Opening day I will start at Convict in the AM then breakfast at Toms place, hit a couple of creeks, and end up at Lundy in the afternoon. I am counting the hours untill the opener. If anyone wants to say hello, I will be the one at Convict with the 15lb brown. Good luck to everyone that is going. Sucks for those that are not.

Leaving Friday morning around 3:00. Hit the sand traps on the way up, then the Lower Owens, then drink beer and look and Rock Creek Lake fishermen scope out their spots for the next day. You won't catch me walking on that ice!
Saturday morning hit Convict. We will come back Tuesday, so between the Opener and Tuesday, we will hit East Walker, June Loop, Convict, Crowley, and Bishop(whew!!!!!!). And as many waters in between as we can.

We fish Crowley on Saturday. Nothing like those holdovers for both fightnig and eating. Sunday we'll be at Lundy, then Convict and finally Baker Creek ponds for finishing limits and/or picnic lunch before the drive home Sunday night.
Leaving Wednesday morning. Can't wait.

I hope to cut out of work around noon on Thursday and head up 395. The Town of Crowley Lake will be our base of operations, as a friend has a home there. Of course Saturday morning we'll be float tubing in McGee bay with hundreds of others...

The big question is where to fish Friday. Most years we fish the Owens the day before... Two years back we fished Walker Lake NV, and got some really nice Cutts. This year we're talking about Topaz, as I've never fished that one before. So, what you guys & gals think? Should we do Topaz or Walker on Friday???

I talked Mom into going with me several years ago and now I couldn't make her stay home if I wanted to (she packed her bag a week before we left this year, LOL) so, I always rent a condo in Mammoth for the weekend. It's not cheap at c.$200 a night, but that's for the 4-6 of us who usually show up, and it's admittedly a luxury trip, just for Mom.
Campgrounds go for $18 a night and can be reserved online (is it reserveusa.com?) and you can go up from that. Motel 6 in Mammoth is $70 a night, as are most of the Bishop and Big Pine motels. Convict has a couple of cabins, one holds something like 16 and is a good bargain if you have a big group that will pitch in.
For your first time, reserve a motel room so you won't have to worry about knowing where to go and if there will be an open campsite. For the opener, holidays and most of the summer weekends, there won't be an open site if you get there after Wednesday.
Base your trip out of the room, and be looking for someplace that you would like to camp or a different motel location.
Also, after Labor Day the crouds are gone, even on weekends, and the fishing just gets better. Don't overlook a fall trip.
Most importantly, get up there, fish a lot, and have a great time!
