Ok this might be a repeat question. But I have been wondering latly how could one get there hands on some of these really bad *** japanese reels that I see on the web, and in the 2 issues ago of B.A.S.S. I found a couple web sites but there still located in japan, anyone ever use them to get gear. Im more or less interisted in like 3 reels, I want one with a cork handle and in a lefty but they never go used on ebay or here so im thinking about trying to get a new one. Anyone know how this can be done?

i think those guys are legit. i would order from them. make sure you can't get those models from ebay first though. there are some california guys (ReelSeller) and a couple others who have a lot of JDM stuff and can get pretty much anything if you know what you want.

Japantackle and Ichiban both ship quickly and are totally legit to deal with. I've purchased several things from both, and was completely satisfied. You'll have no problems from either. Jun at japantackle responds to your emails pretty fast, so I'd email him if you had any questions. Nice guy too.

Ditto.

I've dealt with Ichiban, Plat, and JapanTackle, and JapanProFishing. All come highly recommended.

Sometimes it amazes me how they can get your order to you faster than when you order domestically.

Reels? All my JDM stuff I've picked up either on eBay, or through Classifieds on various sites.

Read warranty information, though. Stuff bought from Japan may have different warranties than USDM items.

Like none at all?

Actually DS, you know of any JDM reels that are covered and get serviced in the US? I heard that Shimano will order JDM parts for you, and they'll maintain some JDM reels as well. I have no personal experience though, so not sure if that is a valid fact or just a rumor.

JapanTackle, Ichiban, Plat, and Bass.JP are the ones that I've dealt with and they're pretty good with communication and quick with shipping. I've gotten reel in 4 days from Japan EMS where it takes a week to get a reel from Sacramento USPS.

No warranty whatsoever unless you want to ship it to one of the tackle shops in Japan and have them deal with it for you. Lots of people here in the States that can maintain JDM very well. Many JDM parts are interchangeable with USDM and vice versa. I've found that JDM is more about cosmetic and weight reduction with attention to detail whereas USDM is built ruggedly to last forever.

Shimano will not touch a JDM reel, let alone purchase parts from their "brothers". Parts can be purchased through the tackle shop you order your reel from. I have a feeling Daiwa will do no different.

Go to Tackletour.com and look into their for sale / trade links. You will find a lot of JDM stuff in there. I buy a lot of my rare prizes in there.

Shimano in Irvine repaired my buddys Shimano Antares (Calais USA) at no charge. The handle came off from a loose screw and they fixed it. They can fix items if they have the parts since they are basically the same reels. However charging for it is on who does it, they are supposed to charge since it isn't covered but sometimes they'll do it as a courtesy. I love Shimano

You will not be disappointed with the Alphas TypeR. I have it in left hand retrieve and it is just pure butter. I actually got mine through the Japanese yahoo auction site. It was considered "used", but was in perfect condition since the seller only used it once.

Also if you are concerned with the maintenance, there is a guy on tackletour.com that is very knowledgeable about JDM reels. I think Nitroman77 is his user name.

Just out of curiosity, how come the japanese fishing equipment is so much more refined the US stuff? Do they have better fishing opportunities in Japan?

Wouldn't say more opportunity, but a much better high-end market. The people from across the big pond love high-end stuff. Supply and demand. Here in the U.S., the best-selling market is the $200 and under where the Curado E and Revos are king. Who the hell wants an Aggrest? In Japan, the $200 and above is the best-selling market, so JDM reel manufacturers market accordingly.

That said, I think Daiwa USA will release a few reels in the $180-250 price range due to their issues with the Fuego/Sol/Aggrest.

ckc got it. I've also heard that JDM gear focuses more on being light and feeling refined while USDM is more robust with less bearings since American anglers abuse their gear much more. Keep in mind that Shimano and Daiwa are Japanese companies, so it makes sense for them to release their higher end and more exclusive gear to their home market, while allowing their branch corporations to develop/modify product for their target demographic.

I have worked on a lot of JDM & their American counterparts....
Out of 7 reels sitting here right now waiting for parts, one is a Alphas (Sol) and one is a Metainium MG7 (Core 100).
Only diff I see in them is maybe an added bearing here and there (mostly for show & advertising) and some outside color differences..
Other wise functionally they are the same and the parts are interchangeable...

Any of you that have had, or have a business know how expensive it is to have diff parts for items..
It costs a fortune to buy and stock them..
Having interchangeable parts saves a bundle..
Shimano is the Co that I see almost all parts the same size or shape.
One size spool bearing fits darn near every Shimano reel from smallest low profile & all DC's etc, up to to 400 size round reels.
Talk about squeezing a penny out of buying parts!!!
Thats not a bad thing, it is just good business....

I hear you Nessie. Thing is, JDM market has many reels that are unique and have no comparable USDM counterpart. Reels such as the Cardiff 50DC and Pixy. Like you said, many parts are interchangeable for cost reasons, but there is more to it than that.

They are leggit ^.^. One of them sends free gifts when orderin a specific amount (e.g. crankbaits; jerkbaits; stickers; line cutters- some were branded good names) I think the company was JP-proshop?

I have given up on getting more tackle for the most part unless needed for now. Im more in the pursuit of a boat lol.

Someday when I have some spare jack laying around I may get back in the market for a new reel.
