We boarded the Tradition once again today in search of rockfish, sculpin, and lings. We rolled off the dock at 6am, and picked up some quality sardines from the new bait receiver. Our crew consisted of Captain Steven Konrady, with crew of Morgon and Bobby, and Derrick in the galley. Stevo explained that rockfishing was pretty good during the week, and he would try his best to put us over the fish again. After a while, we arrived at our first spot.
We started picking away at some nice boscos and green striped rockfish, with the more quality boscos being taken on sardines. We made a couple more drifts picking away at the rockfish, which lead to some more boscos, some barber poles, and some nice grouper. We moved on to another spot, and started having a nice pick on the chilipeppers. Fishing was pretty good on quality rockfish for a while, but we were drifting differently than they had drifted during the week, so we headed in a bit shallower for a shot at some sculpin, whitefish, or lings.
We got to the spot and anchored up, and the Betty-G also anchored up, close by. We only got a sheephead and a sculpin, while the Betty-G had a steady pick on the sculpin. We moved on the other side of them, and we also started catching some quality sculpin. The bigger sculpin were biting sardines, but some of them seemed to just “sit” on the bait, as I hooked a couple by the gill. With enough fish in the sacks, Steven headed in towards the beach to try some halibut drifts, while Morgon and Bobby started filleting fish, and they did an excellent job as always.
We had four drifts for the rest of the day. The first drift led to no biters, but the second drift had a hookup and scratched bait for a couple guys, but nothing transpired. The third and fourth drifts held nothing – no scratches, no biters. There was a ton of sardine in the area, which is a good sign for the summer, so when it comes time to go to the island, we will have plenty of quality bait.
Stevo did an excellent job of finding the fish today, and the fish were present in both quality and quantity. Everyone took home nice fillets of cod today, all ready for the grill. I believe jackpot went to a nice salmon grouper that was about four or five pounds. Great times, great fishing!
