The annual Los Angeles Rod and Reel club special need Kid’s Trout derby is now in the history books. Friday April 9th, 7AM, Hansen Dam Lake, 60 degrees, calm, and 1,100 Alpers, and DFG Stockers, were waiting for 45 special needs kids. With 88 volunteers, 12 from the board, setting up rod holders, bait, tackle, and enjoying a breakfast at the lake which was closed to the public for the event.

A special thanks to Wingnut, Bones, Lucas, Feelthesteelgary, Gordy, Pappa Gordy, Hittson, NohoArt, KPN, Finsmackdown, Flyinby, my son Fishyboy and everyonel else that gave their time, effort and of themselves foir the kids.

I arrived just shy of 7AM , about 20 volunteers were already there, we set up, talked, ate , and waited for the kids. Some pre-fishing was in order, so Feelthesteelgary, obliged and quickly cauth a nice stocker.

There was some problems with the lAUSD bus, so the kids were late in arrival. They arrived about 10, and very quickly they were paired with willing anglers, and started fishing. These kids were excited, and meant business!

As the morning passed, the bite never really materialized. Thanks to the secret sauce, and some polished angling skills FNN volunteers produced fish, and the kids were reeling in trout! KPN, with his scampi sauce had a steady pick on the trout, his angling buddy for the day enjoying success. Wingnut had a Alper magnet, and his angling buddy was soon fighting what may have been the biggest fish of the day.

Gordy, Big Red, all failed miserably in getting their partners on fish, but Gordy made up for it by eating 3 hamburgers, two hot dogs, and a cookie..

Bones split his day between fishing, and camera man.

Before long it was lunch time, burgers, chicken, chips, chili dogs and more……………..

While it was the slowest event fishing wise in recent history, the kids had a blast, and I believe it is safe to say the volunteers did as well. Personally, this is my favorite event of the year; the kids are so special, and full of life. They touch your hear in a way beyond words, and are without pretense, or reserve..

Here are pictures of the event, thanks for reading.

A special thanks to you Capt Scott for inviting your fellowship of FNN friends to a very special event that always is
rewarding in many ways.

I had a great time today and even though the kids arrived a little late and the fishing was on the slow side
it was a great opportunity to hang out with the LARRC folks and The FNN family as well. I was able to catch up
on alot of things and talk with many guys who I havn't seen since the last event. What a great time full of nothing
but smiles and warm hearted thoughts. Working with these children is truely an honor and an eye opening experience
that makes you take nothing for granted in life. Props to all who attended......Your hearts are second to none!!
I'm sure that there are going to be enough pics of the day so I will only add a small video that I shot of Wingnut
Getting his kid on a nice fish and successfully putting it in the net.

Mike, Arthur,

Thank you again for helping at the trout derby. Both of you have become an integral part of the event, as have all the FNN'ers that help out each year. I always feel so at peace after this event, these kids may have some disabilities, but they are kids, and their unbridled joy is contagious.

Bones, great video, that was a nice fish!

By the way, I fished for about an hour after you left, big fat skunk, Fishyboy batted a 0 as well..............

What to say, those kids are absolutely wonderful, the smiles were there to be seen all around.

It is such a great event to have and I want to acknowledge, 1st off, the LA Rod and Reel Club for arranging and financing this event, in the years I’ve been involved as a volunteer, I’ve watched those kids not only get to have a wonderful fishing experience but they just flat out have a great day out and about, a day in the park, picnic, conradery with the wonderful volunteers and with a little luck, some fish to boot.

I don’t think you could ask for a better day out in the sun : )

I’d also like to thank each and every individual that donated their time to help out, FNN’rs, Rod and reel club alike, also I thought about this and thought we should give a special thanks to those parties that did all the behind the scenes stuff, the arranging of the even ! that’s no small chore and we all take that for granted, “IT’S ALLOT OF WORK” I tip my hat to you unsung heroes, without you individuals this even would not happen, I tip my fishing hat to you !

Also the people who stayed back to cook and so forth and to arrange the food layout, those things are not thought about either !....I applaud you as well !

Boy, I can’t say enough good things about those kids….everytime, I see smiles and smiles and not 1 child misbehaving, nothing but pure pure hearts and pure joy.

Darn, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I almost shed a tear when my child “Gabrielle” came up and gave me the largest most heartfelt hug I think I’ve ever had.

My heart simply melted, their hearts and soul’s are so pure it’s a beautiful thing just to be able to share the experience with them, they really do deserve a break and good day on the water : )

I for one can say without question that I am a richer man after a day like that, it really is a humbling experience and brings you down to earth.

Again, I’ll say that if anyone is considering ever helping in such an event, please do, these kids need this sort of interaction and you too will take away just as much as the kids, I encourage you to get involved in ANY event of this nature !

Also, I’ll tell you a little something about divine intervention.
The bite was more than a little tough and during the time the kids were delayed I think there might have been only 1 fish caught…b4 they arrived.

The kids arrived…

Here’s the divine intervention: I held Gabrielle’s hand and walked her over to the water, no sooner than 30 SECONDS after she arrived by the water…..the rod was bendo and Gabrielle was on her 1st fish….maybe you had to be there but it was magical, I do believe the man upstairs was looking down and wanted that to happen……It was a great experience…

Gabrielle (with a little coaching) reeled the fish in all on her own and was soon sporting me high fives charged with max smiles…

It wasn’t long before she had another hookup and 2 on the stringer which she was proudly displaying for all photographers !

My little Garlic PB proved to be the hott ticket this day, only occasionally I added my Garlic/Corn combo sauce, the bait was doing it’s own thing.

I lent some to Wingnut and I believe it did the trick for him and his child as well.

A couple of other anglers next to me got onto some action soon after my Garlic flowed : )
(next year I'm going to have to look into bringing the right bait for the masses-let's talk Scott)

I’ll sum it up by saying I really do hope that this day will last a lifetime in these kids memories, I know it will in mine.

Salute !
Gary

Thanks again Scott for your big help in putting this whole thing together!!. I am glad i made it out again this year it is always good to help others that are not as fortunate as many other individuals are and to bring a smile to their faces and to hear them laugh is always priceless. Great job all of you! Looks like you and the kids had a blast! Had the chance to volunteer as well, but a last minute call to do a temp job made it impossible to attend. But your report was excellent and I am truly sorry to have missed it. Unfortunately I haven't worked since last July and I couldn't turn any offers of employment down. Hopefully I will be able to make it next year.

CAPT'N,
Congrats to you and all the FNN Crew who helped out on another "Special" event. I loved this report last year and it was tops in my all time fishing report and so I looked forward to this report for this year. It was again the most heartfelt report. I loved seeing the huge smiles on those wonderful kids faces, you could truly see their joy. The smile on those kids faces brought a smile to mine and a lil tear in my eye, they truly are special kids.
Congrats once again and thanks for posting up this most excellent report.
