Got my season permit and float tube inspected for quagga mussles (hassle, but I understand). Launched by the Observatory and in the water by 8am. Already a little windy and the wind direction was generally easterly as usual.

Within 30 minutes I got one big strike on a green woolly bugger that broke my leader :( After that I fished with a triple fly combo on the fly rob and dragged around some gulp under a bobber at about 15' on another pole.

No more bites the rest of the morning and didn't see any other tubers or boaters catching much.

About 10am the wind shifted to blow northerly and got REALLY cold and strong (blowing off of the ski slopes into the lake) really strange wind direction. Low pressure system starting to move in - expecting possible light snow Sunday late into Monday.

By 11 the wind was so bad I had to hang it up for the day - too cold and kept getting blown directly into shore.

Maybe the bite will pick up once the weather patterns stabilize a bit more - maybe I just suck!

Brother and Nephew texted a KILLER picture of a 6.5lb large mouth they picked up in the morning at Tri City Park. Hopefully they'll post a report. Should have stayed down the hill and fished with them.

Sorry didn't have better news to report. Not sure how the shore bite was doing.

How much would a yearly pass be for my kayak on Big Bear Lake? I was thinking about going up with the kayak instead of fishing from shore. Although fishing from shore has been pretty good it gets kinda old standing on shore. I like being out on the water trolling around, I've never done it at big bear. Thanks for the info.

Last week my brother and I got out of the hospital early so we decided to head up the mountain for an evening bite, that was when we had a couple cold days and some rain, brrr! Anyways we caught 4 rainbows in the 2 hours we fished and lost some more, pretty decent quick trip.

These fish werern't taking the bait, I had to change it up to lures. Caught some on the mini jig, and I hooked a couple good ones on a spoon. One hit about 70 yards of shore came up for a big fat jump and flop, looked big for sure over three pounds, maybe up to 5. Oh well I guess I'll never know. I see some good ones swimming around but I always seem to break a couple good ones off everytime I go. I'll get em eventually, haha! Its funny about 10 percent of the fis i catch have hooks in their mouths with broken line attached. One day I even caught the same fish I broke off earlier cause it still had the same bait and treble I was using in its mouth. They are active out there, go get em.

Tomorrow I'll be smoking trout again, demolished the last five. I'll have to slow down, don't want to get colon cancer, yikes! but sooo good!

Hey ET,

Good to hear from you. Sorry the bite was tough ..... and cold. Always great to get out on the water though, especially at the Bear. Looking forward to a better seasan than last year. Maybe we'll be able to hook up at some point this year. I'll give you a heads-up when I'm going up.

Great report! I gotta get up there for some early morning spin casting at the dam, it looks like.
And colon cancer, what are you talking about? These fish aren't made out of bacon and steak are they?!
