View Full Version : Late Weekend 2-day NPH Report

Jason and I haven't been out on the water in our inflatable at NPH since the summer of last year and we've been anxiously waiting for the perfect conditions to make our return. We've been going on foot here and there to refamiliarize ourselves with our usual hunting grounds and scout out some new areas that seemed promising. We marked our calendar over a month ago for 03/27-03/28. The spotties have been heating up and we were ready for 2 great days of fishing. Luckily for us, they turned out to be 2 of our best yet.

Day 1 (Saturday, 03/27)

Was on the water at 0630, right before sunrise. Our plan was to hit up our usual spots on day 1 and our new areas on day 2. Water was a little murky but calm, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Slight breeze in the morning which turned ugly by the afternoon. All fish caught on Big Hammer and a couple on the DS... all cpr'd of course.

We took a pic of every fish for the count, but many of the pics looked the same, so I threw some together for those who love lookin at pics. Enjoy!

We found that Gulp camo jerkshad stuck to a buoy... does that rig look familiar to anyone?

In the end we had a pretty good day. Caught my first smoothound ever! Fought really hard and pulled lots of drag. When we were trying to get that pic he was dripping blood all over the boat, gross.

Bite slowed down and wind picked up so we called it a day around 1430 to go home and recharge for day 2.

Combined Fish Count for Day 1:
1 Smoothound (my first ever!)
1 Short hali
1 Sandie
18 Spotties

Day 2 (Sunday, 03/28)

Woke up a little late  and ended up making our first cast around 0730. Jason likes to tube this new area but it was my first time hitting it up from the water. I managed 3 spotties in the first 10 minutes and knew it was gonna be a good day. But our excitement died down when we didn't catch anything else for about an hour. Where were all the fish?

We discovered the culprit a short time later... we caught up to a yakker who was getting to all the docks before us! And he was fishing them quite thoroughly. We didn't hesitate to leapfrog him and sure enough...

Again, we took a pic of mostly every fish for the count. All the pics looked pretty much the same (fish on the hook halfway in the water on the side of the boat) so again I threw some together for your enjoyment.

The most fish I've caught in one session

It was nice seeing you all again! Steve, thanks again for thinking of us and we can't wait to be your guests once again on the Spotted Fever. :Envious: John, I saw your son bring up some spotties like a pro... he's got a great teacher! :Big Grin: Arthur, nice job on that bat ray, that looked REALLY tiring, lol! It was cool seeing you in action and we hope we can all fish together sometime.

Since the fish kept biting we stayed a bit longer than Saturday; but the wind was going crazy and it wasn't working out very well for us in our little inflatable and trolling motor. We called it quits around 1930.

Combined Fish Count for Day 2:
1 Spotfin Croaker
2 YFCs
4 Short halis
48 Spotties :Big Smile:

Encore Session

Jason decided to recon a new area in his tube today 03/30. Here are some pics of his biggest fish.

You two tore it up out there!!
Thanks for the comment about my son:LOL:

Those are some toad Bass you got from your tube Jason, nice going!!

That T-rigged gulp appears to be mine:Envious:. That looks like a 3/0 wide gap hook with a cheap bullet weight. Eddie uses a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. I have probably lost about 15 of those to the docks

Haha I'd say its mine cause I'm using the same setup as Klocked (Thanks for the help man!), but i just lost mine a day ago. I did manage to somehow cast it through the steel ring on the top of the bouy, but got it back.

Tesserz,

Was heartbroken to see you had the diffculty posting the previous attempt to post of your weekend Basstravaganza!!!!!

Now I know why some of "The Spots" failed to produce due to them being hit before we got there! :Big Grin:

That was a cool move and great distraction when Jaysuuun "PM'd" me asking me where we were at and how bad the fishing was so you 2 so you could work those areas while we were experimenting up to the north with some success.

Thanks again for leaving the left over scrappy ones for us.

All kidding aside! What a great weekend you 2 had spending quality time on the water together!:High Five:

Great fish counts and some new species! And to think of your modesty telling us there were no worthy fish to report but the pics tell the truth!!!!!!:Smash:

Look forward to the Sequal Trip on the "Spotted Fever" Maybe you could share some knowledge with a noobie!!Thumbs Up:

Haha thanks Robert. Jason caught a tiny smoothhound off the surf a couple years back so it was pretty cool to see a bigger one. I'll have to go check out your post. Hooray for firsts for both of us!

Thanks Bones! You are way too kind. We've definitely come a long way from when we first started at NPH, but still farrrr from being Newport Legends. And there's no way we would've learned so much so fast if it wasn't for all the help/advice from other FNN members (you know who you are).
Yipes, SWBA tourneys??? We'd probably need a real boat first... with a real motor... oh and a livewell. But so far we're doing pretty well on our little inflatable. Maybe someday.
And about the message to Jason... hehehehehehehe... I like that.

Nice report!! You guys make it seem so easy..

Thanks! Some days are better than others, and of course it's easier to get more numbers from a boat rather than from shore. Every day is different though... we were lucky that it turned out to be a good weekend to be out there.

Great report. That was a good weekend of fishing at NPH. You two really know the harbor and manage to find quality fish. Thanks.

Thanks! We actually have yet to explore the entire harbor. We're a little limited to where our electric trolling motor can take us, but we do with what we have for now. Seems to do the job. :Envious:

Ya, I was pissed when trying to post the first time... funny that you got to see it though. ("Basstravaganza" was my idea btw, LOL)

Sheesh, it's not like we were trying to sabatoge you guys! :Rolls Eyes: It was easy for us to leapfrog a yakker but there was no way we could leapfrog the Spotted Fever. We had to resort to mind games and misdirection instead. Not good enough though with Arthur catching that HAWG! :Envious:

Modesty? It was all quantity, no real quality (huge batray, pb spottie, smelly midshipman). But it was surely tons of fun. And yes, can't wait till we come up on that waiting list for the Spotted Fever. Noobie?? We haven't forgotten that you're the one who showed us where to hunt for all these fishies!

Hey,

Thanks Taiko! We still get skunked like the best of 'em... we just don't post those reports.

Either way, I'm glad it worked out that good and please refer to it as the "ryryk" from now on lol. jk

Going out this weekend probably to my rock... NPH is probably going to be a weekday trip for me cause i hate crowds, and that parking situation. Maybe for my b-day 4/14!

Hey bones thanks for all the compliments. Joining the SWBA sounds a little intimidating espcecially on our little inflatable. Maybe someday when we have the space for a fully equipped bass rig.

As far as marriage, I'm working on it. She's beautiful, smart and .... she loves to FISH! :EyePop: She's a real keeper!

As I replied to Wingnut, we hope to meet up with guys for a surf outing somtime this year. I want to get Tess on her first surf hali.

LOL Steve, distraction was our only line of defense. Our little inflatable is no match when the Spotted Fever is on the prowl. Especially with 4 highly skilled fisherman aboard.

There really wasn't anything post worthy from Sundays report. A majority of the spotties caught that day were just under legal size. The only fish noteworthy was Tess' football -sized Spot Fin.

It was great to see our fellow Team 57 members out there representing in the harbor. I can't wait for the sequel. :Big Grin:

LOL The "ryryk" produced well for us out in NPH. And good luck out there at "The Rock". That place has been producing some nice spotties for you.

NPH isn't too bad as long as you get out there early enough like around 6-7am. Any later and the parking gets takin up by beach goers. My birthday is also in April.
