Hi,

I'm interesting in doing a couple of 3-4 night backpack trips into the Sierras. I've fished in Bishop and Mammoth areas but have never gone in overnight.

Can anybody suggest a trail or set of lakes to backpack into?

thanks,

Try the little lakes valley in Rock Creek area, or the 20 lakes basin up by Saddlebag. Both are awesome trails, that I have always wanted to do, and the Little Lakes Valley is a very easy hike from what i've heard.

You can check out rock creeks website and they have a virtual hike of the little lakes valley.... http://rockcreeklake.com/virtual/llvalley/llvalley.htm

If this is your first over night trip I would suggest something short. Saddlebag Lake and Rockcreek Canyon have fairly easy hikes into beautiful country. The opportunities are endless. It depends on what you want to do. I hike for Goldens, so I plan on working my a** off for 3-4 days. There are so many places to see and so little time. Good fishin!

Pick up Sierra Smitty's book Fishing Trails - it's well written and is mainly the shorter hikes:

You can also find some very detailed maps of practically the entire Sierra range by Tom Harrison Maps. If you live close to an REI you can go look at em for free or buy them for less than $10. Also, do your research about the area. Best bet is to call the local ranger station to find out about pemits, special regs., bear canisters and bear safety, etc. Good luck, you'll have a great time anywhere you go!
