Tim (8) and I drove up to Isabella on Thursday night and scored a descent position on Engineer point about 800 ft. from the dam on the Aux. side.
Friday was our warm up day so we started throwing all kinds of stuff to see what these trout were going to hit. Ended the day with 5 all dinks except one. Didn't figure it out until about an hour later that it was tagged. He had spent enought time rolling in the dirt and on the stringer getting smashed by the waves that he wasn't going to survive if I released him. Too bad. He was only a $20 fish anyway.
Saturday we went out on the kayak for a while. Tim scored 2 dinks (no tags) almost immediately. Nothing the rest of the day. Metered the cats laying down in the canal still sleeping the winter away. Not much else showed up. Water temps by the dam were about 53. Pretty breezy all day.
Sunday was great weather and no fish at all. Saw others going ok. We threw all the usual at them. Mid day we moved over to Kissack Bay and jumped in the kayak for a few hours. Nothing but crappie showing on the meter. Water temps in the coves was about 60. Sunday was the only descent day
for boating.
Monday was a windy blow out. We moved from kissack bay in the morning over to an area between French Gulch and Boulder Gulch. Had one one early but Tim didn't get the hook set on it. That was the only action we got all day. Headed home at 4 pretty windburnt and tired.
So our derby summary:
7 trout
1 tagged but caught before the official beginning.
Others have complained as well, but boating in So. Cal is dangerous anywhere you go now. Too many morons behind the wheel looking the other way and having no regard for smaller craft at all.
Also, some folk don't know it or pretend to be stupid...there is no minimum distance for boats from shore...during the derby or otherwise. It seems that shore fisherman think they have a "right" to all casting distance from shore and boats don't belong there. Uh, lets be honest. We both know where the fish are. Unless there is a specific regualation on it we all just have to learn how to share. I don't need to tell you how fast hitting a kid with a sinker would turn into an assault charge...and if that is all that came of it you would be lucky. Don't take that chance.
