Sunday 3/28/10 NPH Report. Saturday 3/27/10 Surf Report to follow.

Got a call from my S.W.A.T. Captain Steve (Flyngby) telling me that the “Spotted Fever” is in top shape and ready to hit the water at his favorite playing ground. No need to ask me twice, always a treat to join Steve & company for a fun filled and relaxing day on the water in the OC.

Met Steve at his new nest at 5:00am, loaded up and we were on our way. Launched at sunrise and motored across the bay to pick John Klocked & Son. It was an absolutely beautiful day with near perfect conditions… nice tidal movement and the water was clean and warm at 64 degrees. Man, if only the water temperature was this warm in the surf. The Flatties would be going nuts!

Anyways, great fishing with good friends, it doesn’t get much better than that.

I’ll continue to narrate throughout the report in between the pics…

Sunrise in the harbor.

Can anybody help to identify this fish? It’s not a Lizard Fish… we were thinking a baby Ling or a small Midshipman maybe…?

John and Son were the next to score…in the meantime, I’m still nursing a Skunk. Lol

Then something grabs my dropshot rig and bolted at a high rate of speed. Before I knew it, half of the spool of the Stella 3000 was gone. I buckled down on the drag and the chase was on. We all knew right away that it was either a big Shark or Ray. I won’t go into a five paragraph descriptions on how I landed this fish. But I can tell you that it was quite a workout. My arms feels like jelly afterwards. About a 30 minute battle and we moved about ¼ mile from the original hook-up point. I wasn’t paying attention as I was concentrating on the fight at hand, but apparently, half of the boat traffic of the harbor was circling us during the fight. lol. I just noticed the cheers that erupted around us at the very end when the fish hit the boat deck. Afterwards, I told Steve & John that I couldn’t believe that the #10 Seaguar InvizX line did not break, the knot held and the Owner EBI hook didn’t bend out. Just ask Jason & Tess, who watched the fight from beginning to end, this fish was seriously kicking my butt.

I only took one pic before the release, but Steve will post up a short video of me getting worked by the PB Bat Ray. Lol
What do you guys think… 50lbs plus? I caught a 30lb Bat Ray out of the surf before and this one is much bigger and heavier.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Wingnut%206/Picture032-7.jpg

I had to change my shirt after the major slime fest from the Bat Ray and fished on.

Then came another PB moment for me. Working the smelt color Gulp Jerk Shad on the DS around some tight structures, I get hammered. I initially thought that I had a legal Hali on the line, but it kept trying to head for cover so I figured that it would be a nice Bass of some sort. It was tough trying to keep the fish from wrapping me up in the dock pilings but in the end… I was “lucky” once again!

My PB Spotted Bay Bass.

Beautiful colors and patterns. Even though, it will never replace the Halibut in my heart. I’m starting to warm up to these Spotties Steve. Hahaha
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Wingnut%206/Picture039-6.jpg

We ended the day with a few more Spotties and Sandies at sunset and headed back to the ramp.

What a fun and memorable day. Steve, what more can I say but to reinerate to everybody that you are indeed a class act. The guests on the Spotted Fever are always your first priority and your harbor knowledge and navigating skills are second to none. Thanks for being a big part of my memorable day.

John & Son, it was a pleasure to meet you guys and fish side by side and on top of each other all day. Lol
John, you have taught your son well and he is a mirror image of you. A model citizen with all the skills of fishing and the respect for the sport. Hopefully someday, I will be lucky enough to share these very things with my own child. Great job Dad!

Jason & Tess, great to see you two again… keep up the great job out there. The next time we meet on the water, I expect to see Tess slaying Spotties with her new shiny pink rod.

This has been a great birthday weekend for me.

Until we meet again… fish on everybody!

A friend of mine once asked me, what is my secret of looking and feeling so young. After some thought I answered “It’s because most nights when I went to bed I slept, when I should have sat up and worried.”

Saturday 3/27/10 Surf Report

Since it was my birthday weekend, The “Boss” was being extra nice and gave me the weekend off to go fishing! He’s actually a pretty nice guy once you get to know him.

I had plans to hit the NPH with Steve (Flyngby) on Sunday so I decided to hit up a few local spots in the surf on Saturday with a couple of S.W.A.T. members.

I met JerryG at the drop zone at sunrise and found that the pre-mission intel was way off.
Projected swell was supposed to be 1-2 feet, but it was more like 3-4 feet. Mild offshore breeze was replaced by a gusty on-shore wind. Quite rough, but fish on we did as we combed the area for some calm and clear spots. We did find a few quiet areas and did pretty well with a few Calico Bass and a handful of short Flatties. Still waiting for the water temperature to hit at least 60 degrees… everything else seems to be in order for the Spring bite, it’s just a matter of time.

Here are the pics of our early Spring surf session… enjoy.

Ladies & gentlemen… surf fishing phenom JerryG!

That's a native SoCal plant, the wild cucumber aka Marah fabaceus. Sadly it's inedible. If you see a dead one, the inside looks kind of like those natural exfoliating sponges, and I think it used to be used/sold as such. Thank you Bio class.

Awesome days out there Arthur! That is a toad spotty. If they only got a bit bigger, I think spotties would be a major sport fish. Very nice size bat ray too, and that's a major accomplishment on 10lb line. IGFA record maybe? By this weekend or next the water temp should be ideal, and I am looking forward to hitting the surf again and getting acquainted with some more SWAT guys.

That's where I should have gone on sunday, the harbor. Me and the boys went shore fishing at castaic and got totally blown out by the wind. We manage a few stripers but overall it sucked. You had quite a weekend bro, i"m shocked to see you still standing.
You got the energy of the energizer rabbit and drug free, kudos to ya my freind. We're going to give castaic another try next sunday, please come show us how it's done.

Great report as usual Arthur. I should have ducked into a harbor myself because the coastline is a tough one right now. That big old grumpy is a TOAD brotha. Kudos to ya and the harbor gang for tearing it up commando style!!

Careful with the batray thing.........You are going to start a batray competition with Gary

I can tell it's a heavy one just by the eyeball lock / knee assistance grab .......... A week ago you traumatized the SNGF in SB county and Now a 50lb batray probably has a "WN" tattoo on it too.....LOL

Dude, you legs seems to be awefully close to that Ray's tail. Don't they have a serious dagger on them?
You're lucky that Bat Ray wasn't an assassin sent from the Halibut clan. Be careful out there bro.
I've seem some big Rays caught on the pier and other places before and that one looks bigger than 50lb.

Arthur, John, John Jr.

It was a pleasure to have you all aboard the "Spotted Fever" yesterday. Glad the "Harbor Mermaid" blessed us with a productive day out there!

If I am not mistaken there were actually 2 other PB Spotties on the boat today. Let's not forget the Quality Spottie that Father and Son tagged teamed on also!

You all kept me busy on the bow with all you hookups today! Sorry for the moments while I was trying to respond to Jaysuuuns Text Messages and hearing those words "OH YES" and and looking up totally disoriented and trying right the ship!

Jaysuuun & Tesserz,

Really glad to see you 2 enjoying quality time on the water together today. We really just stopped by to say high and not poach your spot! Good thing we went around you on the corner or you 2 might have been a news story at 11pm. Big Fish tows couple out to sea!:ROFL:

Thanks for helping with the crowd control and hopefully you also got some great shots of the BAT Battle!

Here are the few pics I took today. Not as many as usual due to being Captain and Decky today! Where the hell was Eddie"Hesbros"! Oh ya he was sitting at home texting and distracting me also wanting to know how the fishing was!

Happy Belated Arthur!

So Eddie felt SOOOOOOOO left out that I had to take him out for some foot patrol today to follow up on yesterdays action. It took some coercing on my part to make him believe that we could get them on a negative low and after we had pounded the area yesterday!

We actually went to the same spots that were dead yesterday and quickly gave up on and got them to produce. Just not to Eddies normal size or production rate for him! Still managed some quality Spotties in the still low tide condition!

Arthur, congrats on the HAWG spottie. That's probably one of the biggest I've seen.
Glad we were there to see you do battle with that batray. I would've given up a long time ago.
That was our first time using that scent and we found that too much of it causes our swimmies to stiffen up and have no action at all. LOL

John and John Jr. WTG out there on the spots. On Saturday, me and Tess might have found something that might belong to you or Eddie. Check the pics in our upcoming post. The pics of John Jr fast asleep crack me up.

Steve that midshipmen is one ugly, but cool looking fish. Definitely a new species to add to our list. Don't know if I would like to handle one like you were doing in the pic. I would be afraid to get warts from that thing.

A beautiful day with good fishing among good friends. It was a pleasure to meet all of you guys out there. Til we meet again.

It looks like you guys had a great time out there catching a lot of fish and new personal bests for everyone on board. Congratulations on the PBs very well done my friends. Another successful voyage led by Captain Steve.

I think these pups are Pug Enforcement Officers assigned to defend the area against any pinniped pirate invaders attempting to high-jack their dock. Also keeping close watch for Yuri Sputnik with orders to attack against any attempts to board the dock by the Seal Pirates or Yuri.

It was a true test of his will and also of his "Walmart Special" gear!:ROFL:

I still remember that first trip on the Spotted Fever and he got Spooled and Schooled so quick and stood at the back of the boat stunned and staring at his gear in disbelief :Bug Eyes: and thinking what the hell just happened!

It was nice seeing you all out there. Congratz on the nice bat ray and pb spottie! I love the pic with the green stink smothering your lure. I love the pictures. Congrats on the PB Spottie and the Ray.
Once again, Happy Birthday!

We shall hit the waters together soon!

Eric
Thanks Big "E", we'll most definitely hook up and fish together again soon my friend.

nice report with nice pics.that spottie is a toad for sure.
Thank you, definitely the biggest Spottie I caught to date.

durian fruit?
Good guess, but I think Marc (BSP) got it positively identified.

Looks like you had a very nice weekend Arthur.
Now when are you going to get some rest?
I hit the beach on Saturday and might have gotten a little bacteria infection from the waste spill in Dana Point?!?
Thanks for all the pictures and both reports,
Robert
Been resting since Sunday night Robert... that was one long weekend. Hope you're feeling better. I heard about the sewage spill at Doheny. Better to stay away whenever this kinda stuff happens... plenty of other beaches to fish at. Take care buddy.

I'm glad you had a nice birthday week Art. Always a blast partying with you buddy.
I think that PB Spotted Bass was a belated birthday present from Poseidon. :Envious:
Nice to see you and Tammy at the party Vince, been awhile.
I would rather get a PB Halibut from Poseidon, but a PB Spottie will do... LOL.

Marc
Thanks for the plant ID Marc... you're one bright young man You will fit in with the USC crowd well.
The Ray on #10 line isn't any record. I think Steel Gary recently caught a even bigger one on #8 line... yikes!
We'll keep in touch throughout the week Marc and plan something in the next coming week or two. Hope you're feeling better too.

I heard that they've been lighting it up at the Castaic dam on bait lately Binh. Get back out there and gettem' bro.
Yeah, it was a long, but fun birthday week, thank goodness birthdays only comes once a year. lol Thanks for coming to the party and for everything you've done my friend.

Swell projected to increase this week buddy. Looks like we will have to seek some sheltered areas to fish this weekend.
About the Bat Ray, I don't even care to catch another one any time soon. Fun, but way too much work. The thought actually crossed my mind during the battle that maybe the line would snap and save me from the misery. LOL
But as fishermen, we "always" want to land everything we hook into.
See ya soon!

Good to see good times, and good fishin reports from you again!!!
But I honestly thought when I saw your thread heading with the
PB in it, you went to SB and caught a PB Halibut!!!! SOON !!!
Hahahahaha... I guess I caught a Flat fish of the wrong species, I'll try to do better next time. lol

You're right bro, I didn't even think about that barb at all. Lucky that Ray didn't leave me a little something to remember it by.
Not exactly sure how much it weighed, but i think 50lbs is a pretty good guess.

Great pics. WTG on the PB Ray and spottie.
Luke is already Team 57 ready for recon.
DR
Luke is a natural, his Dad taught him well! Cracks me up, they actually Boga Gripped the kelp strand. lol

Nice job arthur!!!!!!!

thats funny... i got my pb spottie at 4+lbs on saturday and you got yours sunday. nph is gooooood.!!!
Maybe the same fish! See, catch & release works!!! LOL
Congrats on your PB Spottie also man.

Thanks Jason, really good seeing you & Tess out there. You two are hardcore fishing in that inflatable for two straight days.
That Bat Ray worked me good. It was killing me, I must have brought it to color at least a dozen times, and every time Steve would go to net it, it would dive again and again... It was tough bringing it up a foot at a time but I was determined to get the best of it.
Hope to see you guys back out there soon. We must do a surf outing together sometime this year.

No idea how many fish we all caught but it was enough to make lil' John a happy fisherboy!!
(3rd times a charm!)

Arthur, I don't know why but your big Spotty looks alot bigger than mine. I think you were
just being nice when you said they were about the same size. LOL!

Thank you Steve for the privilege to fish with you on your boat, it's always refreshing to be able
to fish from a different angle once in a while. I still remember the first time on your boat as if it
were my last and this last time as if it were my first.

It was nice meeting you Arthur, thank you for the care package, that will come in handy some
day and good job on your personal bests. That Big Spotty I caught was my personal best too!
You and that setup really put the hurt on that Batray dude!! Amazing!!

After looking at the pictures my son took, they are mostly the same shots as the others so
I wont bother with posting them.

Thanks Arthur, I'm looking forward to finally studying what I want at Marshall. After 4 years in high school, it's good to start learning the skills that will really make a difference in my career. As for Gary's bat ray, that's crazy. The ones I've hooked were on 25lb and 40lb, and even then I've had them snap off!

I've finally kicked the cold, so that sounds like a solid plan. Too bad the swells picked up for the weekend. Harbor, freshwater, or ultra sheltered spot time!

Here is a very shortened video of Wingnut on the Bat Ray!

This time when the alarm bell went off he was quick to tell me we should start the big motor and prepare for battle!:Big Grin:

That is a cool video Steve. Looks like that Ray was kicking Wingnut's butt. Check out the bend in that Carrot Stix. Also, sounds like you were getting a little frustrated there Art. Just imagine how you would react when you bring it up at first color and saw a monster Flattie instead of a Bat Ray. Don't you wish!
I'll bet ya any amount of money you can't duplicate that with the Superman pole. Wanna bet you sissy.

WN,
Dual report sweet, o.k. your off the hook for leaving us postless for awhile, lol. What a BDay weekend you had, so how was the BD Party?, hope the Pooo girl wasn't invited, rofl. Multi species weekend on the Spotted Fever, gotta love it. Doesn't surprise me you got two PB's, thanxs Cpt. Flyngby for getting him on those feesh,. You guys have "YOUR" Harbor dialed in for sure :Envious:. Even the Seals and the Pugs have to say "Sup" to the Spotted Fever crew. "Bait and Wait" Bones, haha. Glad he had a fun day with his kids. I guess all my harrassment calls to your Boss paid off he let you off for the weekend...... I thought for sure your title was a PB Hali also, soon, very soon.
Take Care,

NG

p.s. Mike said HBD to ya, his was on the 23rd. He went fishing sat and caught 3 LMB, a cat and his first lil Pike and a couple of nice Crappies, finally they are getting some sun out in VA.
The party went great... a little too good... Can't believe you remembered the "Poo Girl."
It was a fun weekend for sure, hopefully the "Boss" will continue to give me more slack.
Wish Mike a belated Happy Birthday for me... glad to see him getting out to fish.
BTW - Thanks for the birthday card, I appreciate that very much. :Big Grin:

Once again, thank you Steve for letting us board the Spotted Fever with you and Wingnut.
We had a blast out there in the harbor. It was great to see Jason and Tess out there as well.

John, it was a pleasure fishing with you & your son. Lots of fish, fun & laughter all day. I forgot to mention we got to see a short R-rated feature too. :Secret: Did those pics that little John took come out okay?
Congrats on your PB Spottie also, I thought you caught some even bigger than that before. :Envious: Thanks again for the good company and hope we can do it all again soon.

wow awesome report!

Thanks, we always have a good time fishing on the "Spotted Fever". You will rarely fail with Steve as your harbor guide. :Big Grin: You seem to be getting the hang of it yourself, good luck out there.

Marc, you made a wise decision to attend USC... fight on! Some of my best memories are from there in my college years. Have fun choosing a fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau baby! I still remember those toga parties. Glad you're feeling better, we need to hit the surf together soon.

I'll call ya next week Dana... The Hill it is! Dinner on me.
Thanks again for the fantastic Rib Eye & Lobster birthday dinner. It was one of the few times that I couldn't finish my plate... so much food! But Wingnut Pug was very happy with the doggie bag that I brought home. See ya soon buddy.

Yeah, I was getting a little ticked... I must have brought that thing to color like a dozen times and as soon as it saw the boat or Steve's net, it would bolt off again and again. I really couldn't muscle it too much, the line was at the breaking point already.
You're right, if it came up and turned out to be a big Hali... I would of freaked out for sure. Funny, I wasn't nervous at all knowing that I was battling a Bat Ray, but if it was a Flattie, man, I would probably be a nervous wreck. Totally under control, but nervous nonetheless...
Now about the bet, take it easy buddy, one bet at a time. We already have one currently, and I have the rest of this year to do it. There's no way I'm gonna let you drive my car for a month so don't count on it. The DD Lineside on topwater with the Superman pole is going to be tough, but anything is possible.
BTW - Thanks for coming to my party and the birthday gift. I bet Lauren picked it out, not you. It has her style written all over it. See ya soon my friend.

To ALL! This was a great thread to read!

WTG Arthur on that toad, now you have given me a new mission since you crushed my record from last year! I am so glad you all had a good day, wish I was there, kinda, after seeing the pics Tess took, especially when Steve was netting the ray I think I woulda been scared that I would fall in with out my floaties with the boat listing like it was......John is one big guy!

Big John that is a toad and you sure have come a long ways since the day we first met at NPH walking the channel!

John Jr, Glad to see m boat is not the only that puts you to sleep, WTG on all those fish!

Stevo, as usual you were able to put your guests on fish as you always do......you are one of the NPH pro captains and certainly know the conditions and right places to be! Look forwrd to our next outing.

Take care all and happy catching!

Eddie, it's been too long since we fished together my friend. You need to pack those floaties and join the S.W.A.T. Crew for a few surf sessions this Spring. :Big Grin: I was really disappointed in myself for not finding the time to learn how to hoop with you this year. But next year, that will be a priority for me. As for the PB Spottie, I was on a silent quest to chase your PB after I saw that TOAD you caught at the bridge when we were all fishing together last year. :Envious: With your skills and dedication to the ground assault at NPH, I'm sure that it will just be a matter of time until I'm chasing "your" personal best once again.

Happy Easter to you & your family. I don't have to go to Easter Sunday mass and family dinner until tomorrow evening... so I will be on the Striper hunt with Bob in the morning.
