My wife and I went to Mojave Narrows to see how the trout were doing. Turns out they were doing just great. We got there about 9:00 am and set op at the south end of Pelican Lake and you'd never believe what was there.... About 200 of these guys...

They were pretty cool to watch in flight

I guess I now Know why they call it Pelican Lake. Anyway I first tried the stream with the fly rod for no love so we walked back to the spot were we first set up camp and I set up 2 rods with night crawlers, one rod carolina rigged and one rod set up with a kind of modified dropper loop set up to get the crawler just off the bottom. Then I went to work with a drop shot power worm. About 15 cast later I got this guy.

Then Kim's rod goes off and she lands this one.

I'm thinking; "Two fish an hour into the day... not too bad" I re-bait her crawler (She doesn't like to touch night crawlers, she thinks they're yucky) and toss it out I set the rod down and it gets hit again. Bam, just like that! The dropper loop is the producer. Kim lands her second fish and I re-bait her again. I went back to the drop shot again and hook up!

So we go back and forth like that until we both had limits. Tried a few other things too, Kastmaster, Power bait, Super Duper etc... No love on that. It seemed that the fish only wanted the worms a few inches up off the bottom. The final score: limits for my wife and I. 3 bleeders kept, all others released.
Thanks for reading and good fishing to all....

Pelican is a nice little spot to relax and catch a few... Good job...

Did you notice how the repairs to Horseshoe are coming along?
Any work being done to repair the dam and refill it??

Nessie, I'm sorry I wasn't aware there was any work being done on Horseshoe. I last fished there a couple months ago and it was full then. Thanks for the good words.

The small dam broke out during the heavy Rains.. Pretty much emptied the lake down to a mud hole...
Just wondered if they were repairing it yet....

Pelican is where I practice my Fly fishing???? And I do need need the practice (a lot)... LMAO...

mr. bean, is there any chance you could post a picture of your modified loop rig? I would love to try it.

Mr. Deadone, I tie a dropper loop just like if you were fishing for sandies out on Huntington Flats. Instead of attaching the hook to the loop, I cut the loop and tie it to the cut loop and tie on a #6 octopus hook with a modified clinch knot. Tie the weight directly to the bottom of the line about 24 inches from the hook. Fish this rig with a tight line and it raises the worm up off the bottom a few inches without having to blow the worm up with air. This keeps the worm more lively for longer.
Nessie, I'm right there with you on the fly casting practice... I suck... But getting better!

Do you use a spider hitch for your dropper loop?
