View Full Version : Multi-Species Day Recon... Starting to Look Good Out there! Sunday 3/21/10

Headed out to recon a few areas with Mike (Bones) today to see if the Spring bite have materialized yet.
The answer is "NO", but it's starting to look pretty good. We just need the water temperature to hit 60+ degrees and it's on! Weather is great and water conditions are clear in most places. Beach landscaping is starting to recover and reshape from previous storms. Things are looking up for the Spring bite fellow anglers... so get out there and gettem!

I regret to report that no legal Flatties were caught today, but we had a multi-species day and a decent fish count. A handful of short Halibut, a bunch of Perch and some monster Shovelnose to provide some major bendos... good times!

Techniques: Throwing LC's, Krocs, Dropshotting plastics, C-rig Gulp Camo Sandworms & grubs.

The pictures tells the story, enjoy.

Grey light, somewhere on the California Coast. Flat conditions with -1' swells, love it!

I'm sooooooooo tired today dude!
Fishing with you is always like bootcamp Arthur. You forgot to let everyone know how we started off.
First.....My knee injury (floating cartilliage) stuck right in the joint of my knee provided me with only one good pain free leg for the day. That was really rough even though I took 1600 mg of motrin in three hours.
And then there was you pulling the allnighter after your friends BD party. You show up at 5:00am and as I limp to the curb you say " I just got home 2 hours ago".Just another mind over matter SWAT recon session my friend.
12 hours ..........4 locations...........in waders......out of waders (brrrrrrrr).......200 miles of driving!!!!
What a blast!

Still a walk in the park compared to some of our adventures last year and we have lined up some serious new areas to fish this summer.

Can't wait!

Gotta go.....Greylight and the backside of hightide in one hour.

Arthur and Mike, I see the bites not happening up there...yet, but it still looked like a great adventure. That last perch is huge!

I remember talking to you Saturday night at the party, it was around 2:00am. You looked at your watch and said, I'll be in the surf in a few hours. I thought to myself, no wonder he's the leader of the SWAT Team. That was one nice recon session Art and some beautiful pics to share. Spring is indeed upon us. It was great talking to you at the party whenever the pretty ladies left you alone for a minute that is. lol

Now its the "wingnut and funnybones" show! Mike, your speeding up instead of slowing down. Arthur must do 100 pushups and situps before he pee's in the morning. But high energy outings are always great for looking back, and telling everyone all the things you did in a day. I'll hook up with the team soon brothers! Mikey

Mr. Wiggles! Those things are startling when you step on a big one and then fall down.... not that I know from personal experience of course. Those conditions are looking great, and the bite should pick up in a week or so. I'm glad to see that you're finally coming over to the no waders side of surf fishing too! Even though you guys didn't get any legals, congrats still a great day in the surf and I am looking forward to getting out there again soon.

Mike, you're a surf trooper for sure! I can almost hear your knee crackling as we walk the surf together. As for my all-nighter, no big deal... been there, done that too many times. We definitely have many new places to fish this season. All the time that we've invested in recon missions this Winter will definitely pay off. Funny how we were driving home and just spontaneously pull off the road to hit that last spot. This was the conversation:
Mike: Are you serious... exit right here?
Arthur: Yeah, I haven't fish this spot in a couple of years.
Mike: Do we need to put on our waders...?
Arthur: Screw the waders, we're fishing in shorts and sandals!
Mike: Halibut spot?
Arthur: No, Perch spot...
Mike: We're Perchin'...?
Arthur: Hell yeah we are...

Arthur and Mike, I see the bites not happening up there...yet, but it still looked like a great adventure. That last perch is huge!
Bones, everytime I see an experienced angler with a treble buried past the barb, it's a reminder that one day, it'll be my turn
John, there are only two kinds of fishermen. Those who has already hooked themselves at one time or another or those who are going to hook themselves at one point or another... it's just a matter of time. Hopefully, when "your" time comes, it won't be too bad at all. I did manage to also snag myself on Sunday, but not as bad as Mike. I went for the tail grab of one of the big Shovelnose. The thing was shaking so violently that the LC came flying off and caught me on the hand... luckily, it wasn't very deep.
It's too bad that I didn't get a chance to go hooping with you & Eddie this season. Just couldn't find the time. I sure would have liked to learn from the best... next year!

Great job out there Arthur,

Robert, Mike did have a great time, even with the loss of blood. I was distancing myself from him in the surf all day, because as we all know... blood attracts predators.
And yes, I turn in my gas receipts to the "Boss" and tell him that I was on a weekend business trip. :Secret:

Nice talking to you at the party Binh. Since we're not playing much poker this past year, I haven't seen much of you and the boys at all. We have to make up for loss time my friend, let's break out the card tables and plan a tournament here soon.

No waders? Am I rubbing off on you?? I'll start reconning my AO and then wait for you to come down and catch a bunch of fish around me...
Anthony, funny you should say that because Mike & I was talking about that very thing. It was damn cold in the late afternoon surf fishing in our shorts and sandals. We said we have to give major props to our buddies Anthony, JerryG and Marc for not wearing waders in the Winter time to fish. :Envious:
Recon that area for me bro and give me a call when the Flat ones start waking up!

Nothing wrong with Perchin' Vince... I LOVE the Perch! It was a Perch that got me hooked on surf fishing. I remember walking into the surf for the the first time about four years ago with Dana. Nailing a 12" BSP on my first cast, that was all it took. The Perch have saved me from many Skunk days and they will always have a special place in my heart. :Big Grin:

Not fun... but it comes with the territory. We just shake off the flesh wound and carry on!

Very nice report. One of these days I will get some halibut out of the surf.

Are you using braid backing on the pluton? Also in the surf do you use fluorocarbon leader?
You can do it, invest some time out there and you will succeed.
I don't use braid. The green line that you see on the Pluton is the Steez #12 fluoro, a really strong line. When I throw hardbaits in the surf, I just tie the line straight onto the lure, Halibut aren't typically line shy. I do use a high quality fluorocarbon line while dropshotting though.

Good stuff Arthur........

Hey, you & Tess should come out to NPH this Saturday...  :Secret:

Wooooow!!!Gotta love those conditions. :Big Grin:
I assume you were "down south", I finally got my $Hi+ together(LC's, X-Raps for backup, grubs etc.) Will try to resist the Bass spawn going on @ the lagoon right now and get out to Goleta sometime in the next week.
Thanks for the post, it serves to inspire me to get out there.
LW (aka Robert)
We were actually up North Robert.
Trust me man, catching legal Halibut out of the surf is much more fun and challenging than pulling spawning Bass off their beds anytime. But that's just my opinion.

NPH?! What's out there? I'm officially on spring break and we've been planning to hit up NPH this Saturday for sometime. Tess hasn't been out to NPH by boat since last summer, so she's really excited. Our last couple trips were in HH. The tides look very promising this weekend.

Check your PM Jerry, slight change of plans for the weekend. The "Boss" is allowing me to fish both Saturday & Sunday.
Hopefully, you can head out with us buddy.

Maybe we'll run into each other out there.

Is that a shark egg right above the dead crab pic?
Yes it is an egg case... also known as "Mermaid's Purse." Now what kind of Shark I do not know. Maybe one of our Marine Biologists on the board can help identify. I cast my guess for a Swell Shark.

Thanks man, those Orange Stix works great in the surf. Good luck out there!

Hope you're feeling better Marc. Conditions are steadily improving out there and if the weather stays nice, it's just a matter of time until the bite goes off. Looking forward to hitting the surf again with you and Dad soon buddy.
BTW - Congrats on your decision to attend USC!!! :Dancing Banana:

I'm getting there. Hopefully this week visiting my uncle on Oahu will do me some good, and maybe this haole can get into some fish there as well! I'm listening to my uncle on this one though, so no LCs if we go. Just whipping plugs, and grubs under a clear bubble. Definitely can't wait to hit the surf with you again, it's been a little too long.

As for USC, fight on!!! It's proximity also means I can continue hitting the surf for the next few years. Score!

Nice work out there this past Sunday while I was spending some "Quality Time":Romance: with my "Real Commander"

Some quality wiggles brought to shore! You need to take it easy on Mike as he can't get around like he used too!!!

Looks forward to the trip this weekend on the "SF" in my favorite playground! Hopefully we can find a replacement for Phoung!
