Hey All,
I usually just read the reports, but figured since there are no shots from the derby I will post some. The fishing was pretty good during the weekend. The wind kicked up pretty good on the day of the derby causing lots of white caps, dust storms, and overall tough casting

I'll let the pictures tell the story, here are a few from the weekend....

Question for ya... that was my first time up there, is the fishing always good up there or did I get lucky because of the Derby? I was thinking of making another trip up there in a couple weeks.

Little bit of both... PVR is a great place to fish, but they bloat that res with trout the week or two before the derby. Nice pics btw...

I have a question, how far off is your time stamps on the pics? I noticed some look to be on-time for the derby and some look like they range from two days before... Well done either way for that trip!

The time stamps should be fairly accurate. We rolled up the day before on Friday and had poles in the water by 1PM. Tried some Powerbait and lures to see what was working. My faithful gold/red Thomas Buoyant was the trick. Seems to do well anywhere in the Eastern / Western Sierra's.

On Saturday (Derby Day) we got there by 7:30am and were limited out by 1:00pm. We spent some time after checking out the area. We went to the Gorge and discovered I have no clue how to fish a river  I tried to do the standard "lake tactic" and toss lure into running water. Well that didn't work so well. I managed to snag every plant down stream and thought to myself "yeah I have to learn this first". We didn't walk too far down the road, but the only deep fishing area seemed to be near the power plant at the begining. I hope open day I can walk it further to see if there are other deep fishing areas along that area.

After leaving the Gorge we did a trip up to Rock Creek in hopes of finding a fishing hole, but then discovered it's at ~7,000 FT and buried in snow LOL. No fishing, but had fun playing in snow.

Sunday morning we left the Hotel and went back to throw our lines in one more time. Ended up catching another 3 that morning on lures before we had to make the road trip back down the hill.

What type of bait did you use to catch the DOG?

Every fish was caugh on a 1/4 oz Red/Gold Thomas Bouyant. Tried some other lures and bait-n-wait with no luck, so I stuck with what worked.

I honestly think I lost more fish than I caught. They would either strike hard then go *poof* or I would lose them bringing them in. I am going to try some SureSet hooks for kicks to see if my hook rate is better with those.

I was at PVR last Friday and the water level has to be at least 20 feet lower than what is depicted in the photos...

How was the fishing?

Only fished for about 45 minutes, no bites, fished the Lower Owens for 4 days, 10 hours per day and caught 6 fish. Fishing was horrible as DWP raised the flows and the river was running high and fast.. Flows are supposed to go up to 550 cfs shortly. (600 is flood stage)
Fishing was so bad that on Sunday I never saw another person on the river from Laws to Collins..

I walked in from the Power Plant the Friday prior to the Derby, and PVR was as low as I have ever seen it. I had to walk almost to the ramp to find the start of the res. Fishing was great though. The mud smell was most unpleasant however.

So they dumped that much water in between Fri and Sat?
I've never seen it as high as the pics show (never fished the derby). I spoze they do it so people don't have to scale the 'wall of death' to get to the water for the derby....?
