Lake Mission Viejo Friday March 12, 2010:

Quan brought 2 friends (Tim and Fong) with him who haven’t fished LMV before. The lake was so peaceful you wonder where is everyone? We had an entire area all to ourselves on a good trout bite with double and triple hook ups. Quan and Tim ended doing the tuna shuffle a few times as the fish turned away from the boat. We all limited using powerbait. I caught a bluegill while trying a powerworm. The fish are mixed with Mt Lassen and hard fighting Nebraska’s.

Here are the pics!!

Lake Mission Viejo Trout Tourney Saturday March 13, 2010:

It was a good bite today and a little chilly weather wise with lots of cloud cover. We caught fish but it took me nearly 2 hours before my first fish came into the boat. Don't like that feeling when the bite starts off slow. In one boat was me, Rich, and his cousin Evelyn. The other boat was Glenn and Tom. We went in opposite directions to locate the fish. It didn’t matter as we covered one side of the lake and Glenn/Tom covered the other side. The fish are everywhere and finding the schools is key. The area I took Quan and his 2 friends yesterday was a good bite and we ended up catching our limits. Today, the area was slow so we made a move. The fish could have moved farther out or closer to the dam. After trying out the area we moved to Market Cove for a very consistent bite.

I tossed out bait in Market Cove and was bit immediately. Threw it out and was bit again. After getting 2 fish here I turned the boat in the direction of the fish so Rich and Evelyn could cast to them. Turns out they were bit right away too. They both finished off a 4 fish limit before me. My last fish probably took a ½ hour to catch. All of the fish were caught in 40ft.

Glenn and Tom used other baits to catch their fish. The biggest fish of the tourney was a 2.5lber. Evelyn got first place in the adult division. The randomly drawn blind bogey weight was 4lbs. She picked out a Shimano Rod and reel combo valued at $90.00. This is her 2nd tourney in a row where she placed first in the adult division. Glenn, Tom, Rich, and myself each received a 4-hour boat rental pass because we didn't place in the blind bogey for the available prizes. Quite a few anglers had 4 fish limits that weighed closer to the blind bogey than we did. I had 4.70lbs, Tom and Glenn had over 5.5lbs each. Rich's 4 fish limit weighed 4.55lbs and Evelyn had 4.05lbs.

To wrap up the trout season, it appears Glenn has or will take 3rd place in Angler Of The Year standings. We will know for sure at the next tourney on Saturday March 27th during the bbq. At that time they will present trophies for the top 3 finishes in each division. I didn’t catch a big fish today so it kept me in 4th or 5th place. Just slightly out of the standings. Oooh well! Winning it all isn’t everything. I’ve won the last 2 years so it’s cool. Here are the pics of the event. We all limited out with 4 fish each.

Lake Mission Viejo Sunday March 14, 2010:
This is my 3rd day of fishing in a row. You’d think I’d be tired and rest for a day. Not! I caught a 5.15lb salmonoid today. This fish is a toad considering how many smaller fish are being caught.

Rich wanted to fish again on Sunday for 3 hours. So he calls me around 6:00am while I’m still sleeping. Forgot to set my alarm clock ahead one hour. He’s like you wanna go fishing for 3 hours? I’m like oooh maannn!! It sounded like the Bill Dance tone in regards to like oh no! I got ready quick and met him at the lake while still tired and sleepy!!

3 hours of fishing?! I can handle that. We didn’t need 3 hours as we caught our limits in less than 2 hours. So I catch 2 fish and then tried something else as it needed to be retied. I try powerbait and get bit quickly and land my 3rd fish. We moved shortly after that to try the spot where we fished in Saturday’s tourney. We’ll just use the one anchor since there was no wind. I make a long cast, let it sink, and then was hit hard. I pull back and noticed right away this was a heavy fish. I tell Rich this fish isn’t coming up and I feel heavy weight. The drag on my reel is just screaming and I can’t stop the fish. The fish takes me back and forth around the front of the boat at least 5 times. It nearly made 1 full circle around the boat while keeping it away from Rich’s anchor rope. After about a 15 minute fight this fish finally surfaces and we were in awe!! Holy **** this is a big fish!! When Rich netted it, it barely fit into the net. These Nebraska fish are such hard fighters. It’s awesome to catch them!! This fish had already busted someone else off on powerbait as a dissolved treble hook (1 barb left) was in it’s mouth. It was my 4th fish of the morning to top off a 4 fish limit. Rich still had 3 fish to go. Rich then catches his limit quickly afterward on powwerbait and we leave an open bite for next time.

Ok!! It’s time for a nap. This is only my 3rd day straight of fishing LMV with a few hours of sleep each night. It’s nowhere near what the guys do on The Deadliest Catch tho. They are hardcore fisherman!! Wish that big fish ended up on my stinger during Saturday’s tourney. This is my biggest fish of the 2010 trout season so far. All of my bigger fish have been caught on non tournament days. They are 3.9, 4.6, 5.5, and 5.15.

The weather was great and not a single boat fished near us. We had the outside of Market Cove all to ourselves on a great bite. Here are the pics!!!

How come only a 4 fish limit?

Lake Mission Viejo rules. Each person is allowed 4 fish total per day and largemouth bass must be released. It gives everyone a chance to catch some fish.
