The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

Unless anglers speak up and convince their Congressional representatives to stop this bureaucratic freight train, it appears that the task force will issue a final report for "marine spatial planning" by late March, with President Barack Obama then issuing an Executive Order to implement its recommendations — whatever they may be.

"Recommendations for the Adoption and Implementation of an Oceans, Coasts, and Great Lakes National Policy." a document produced by WWF, Greenpeace, Defenders of Wildlife, Pew Environment Group is seen as the blue print for the adminsitration's burgeoning policy on recreational fishing. This document makes repeated references to "overfishing," but doesn't once reference recreational angling, its importance, and its benefits, both to participants and the resource.

Int he report, recreational angling and commercial fishing are indiscriminately lumped together as harmful to the resource. This viewpoint has persisted with the Administration's task force, despite protests by the angling industry.

Green groups are clamoring for an Executive Order to implement the task force's recommendations even before the public comment period ended in February.

This is not the only access issue threatening the public's right to fish, but it definitely is the most serious, according to Chris Horton, national conservation director for BASS.

"With what's being created, the same principles could apply inland as apply to the oceans," he said. "Under the guise of 'marine spatial planning' entire watersheds could be shut down, even 2,000 miles up a river drainage from the ocean.

"Every angler needs to be aware because if it's not happening in your backyard today or tomorrow, it will be eventually.

by reading this quote "The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters." it sounds like he is NOT excepting any more public input for a strategy that could PROHIBIT u.s. citizens (thats us) from fishing. sounds like Obama is against stopping us from fishing. in other words he isnt gathering anymore evidence that could get fishing banned. sounds like hes trying to help if you ask me.

First off, if you're going to blame someone, don't just shoot at the messenger (figure head), shoot every bureaucrat on the way up, figuratively of course :-). Secondly I agree 100% with vanillagurilla on the verbiage.

Oh, yes... Obama does nothing but sit in his office all day long, glaring out the window and wondering how he can shut down one of the nation's largest sporting industries.

There will be no fishing in the United states in two years! NONE!

This thread is scary...

Looks like ESPN is distancing themselves from this:

This is a column from Robert Montgomery for ESPN Outdoors and the opinions represented are not necessarily those of ESPN.com. As a Senior Writer for BASS Publications, Montgomery has written about conservation, environment, and access issues for more than two decades. It's part of a series of articles from Montgomery on the issue.

Looks like this all stems from a proposed ban on commercial fishing of Bluefin Tuna.

In fact, from what I can tell it's completely generic legalese that contains no actionable policy recommendations in it all. It says zip about recreational fishing, never mind any sort of plan to curtail it.

But that didn't stop other websites from running with the idea of Little Billy getting hauled off to Leavenworth for catching a minnow down by the crick. And, of course, tying it directly to Barack Obama's insatiable lust for power, even though he's probably forgotten that he even created it. (Read between the lines, sheeple!)

Sheeple. That's my new word of the week.
