What a incredible day at Castaic! This was one of my better days fishing at the lake. Every week it keeps getting better and better. I had WFO topwater action on boiling school size stripers, then some huge fish showed up later on. I had a blast. Here is the flash back in time from this morning:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0733.jpg
I was suppose to fish with my friend Ricky this morning, but when I called him, he was too tired to go fish. I was going to do some cattle boat rockfishing as a plan B, but I already did that yesterday. I went ahead and check the weather. The barometer spike was good and a cold front with rain was coming through. All the signs of good striped bass fishing, so I decided it was for sure a striper trip for today. Here is a picture of the Lake before heading down the hill to the ticket office. I swear I saw some boils along the dam.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0734.jpg
I had a really good feeling about today. I put on the same shirt I went rockfishing yesterday. I found a seagull pooped stain on it this morning. I wore it anyways. It is suppose to be good luck. Here is how the ramp looked. Empty. That is my striper killing machine to the inside right next to the rental boat.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0736.jpg
As I coast down the lake to my designed fishing spot I saw some small boils in the water. So I took out my plastics. Instant bendo!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0740.jpg
Stripers! Lots of them boiling on bait fish. If you are wondering what I was using, look at its mouth.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0742.jpg
It is kind of hard to make out. But near the top, those are boils. They were not going out of the water, just small ripples. I did the run and gun thing and slide onto them.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0737.jpg
Bendo on the slide. I tried my best not to spook them. I had a really good slide and I had a wide open bite for awhile. I could have caught 9848 of them today. The new generation of stripers are numerous.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0741.jpg
There wasnt much size to them, but they were plentiful. This one swallowed my plastic. It was amazing watching these guys attack my lure. They were like white missles. If my bait popped off, another schoolie would explode on it. The water was like glass so watching it was awesome.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0744.jpg
Here is another one that I happen to take a picture amidst the wfo bite. I had fun playing with them all morning. There was one instance where I got popped off 4 times and every time my bait was free, another school size striper would attack the bait.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0745.jpg
After the topwater action fizzed out, I went to do some bait and wait. Mann was it good! I started out with a large unit.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0746.jpg
Another large unit! This one had two hooks in its mouth. Guess what? The other hook was my old hook. I could identify it because it had the same ultra small swivel I use and green mono. This fish must have been one that I broke off from my previous week fishing.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0748.jpg
Big bendo again!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0747.jpg
More large units! I am so glad I wore my bird pooped shirt.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0750.jpg
The school bus always shows up. Here is a schoolie water action shot.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0752.jpg
More schoolies.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0755.jpg
After the schoolies left. Some really decent fish started to show up.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0758.jpg
Then it was like someone turned on the lights. Every bait that hit the water was an instant bite. I guess you can say it went WFO again. But this time it was all large units!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0760.jpg
I had doubles quite a few times. All large units. That top one was a x-large unit.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0763.jpg
This is how my cooler looked. I kept all the large units. I needed a couple more large units to fill my limit.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0768.jpg
I was totally beat fighting those large units. So I took a break and had me a Gallions large Italian Combo sandwich. It is a must if you come to Castaic. I washed it down with some peach iced tea. MMMMMmmmm....Soooo Good.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0769.jpg
After I replenish myself. I went back to fishing. It was still good fishing. The school bus made another round.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0770.jpg
Another random schoolie.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0771.jpg
It wasnt long before they went on the chew again and I was getting another double. The bigger models began to push through once more.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0774.jpg
Large unit Bendo! You can say it was WFO!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0779.jpg
Another nice one.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0781.jpg
OK I am done. Limited out on the large units. I cant be too picky on which size to keep. They were all big. I was done by 11ish. Left them biting. Not even a half's day fishing.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0790.jpg
I gave my pops my fish. To give you an idea of the size, here is my pops holding up his dinner.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0796.jpg
Here is me and my big fish. It was a pig.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/dattrinh/IMG_0735.jpg
Parting shot. That is a cormorant on top of the giant bobber.

I hope you enjoyed fishing with me again. I had a great time. See you all next week.

The stripers are definitely getting more active. I was there Sunday and they were boiling all around the launch ramp. No hookups though, so that kind of sucked. Congrats on some killer fish!

Also, the large Richman's is better imo, but the Italian is good too. :Big Grin:

How deep were you anchored : )

It was 65-70ft. It seems like they really like this depth right now. I have no clue to the reason of this.

Probably moving up into their pre-spawning patterning locations and one could guess their finding food sources regularly at that particularv depth (pure speculation)

I saw them staged in about 95' to 120' deep about a month ago....typically you can see the schools of hawgs stage in 175' to 225' out of the channel near the jet ski area bouys on a normal basis, I see it every year other than this year, my last spotting of them staged up in the deepwater canyons was just about when the shad bloom started strong a several months back...and that was out in the main channel north east of C point...this years patterning is different than a normal pattern....

Doesn't matter whatever logic you put into it....you getting them and that's all that matters...
saweet..
Keep up the good work

Check the weather at Castaic before you go tomorrow. It is blowing out there where I am. Dont want you to drive all the way there for nothing.

I was finding them at 90-120 a month ago too. Then I accidently found them by setting the anchor wrong. They kept passing through at 65-70ft range. I am going to keep metering around whenever I go home. You are probably right about the staging thing.
