I stopped by a beach in SM north of the pier yesterday morning for a quick session. It was 59 and cloudy with rain threatening. The Tide seemed to be going out (I don't really know though). I tossed a carolina rigged camo worm for about 30 mins with no hits so I switched to a yellow mullet. On my first cast I felt a thump, I played the bait for a second (something I normally only do while fishing freshwater) felt another thump and set the hook. The fight was pretty crazy for my little rhino pole and 8 lb test. The fish took drag twice, taking me out past the breaking waves (luckily, I had literally just re-spooled or I would have been SOL). I finally got him up on the beach after about 10 minutes. No one was around but a lifeguard driving by looking at me curiously, so I held my fish up by the tail to show him. He got really excited and turned his truck around for a look. I think he was as excited as I was. He called another guard to come see and took pictures for me (he tried to anyway). I didn't have a tape measure but it looked legal to me. Luckily, the guard had a measure in his truck. 28 solid inches!!!
I don't keep my catches so I offered it to mr. lifeguard but his wife didn't want to deal with it soooo, I released it.
When I put him back in the water, he gave me a huge splash and took off like a dolphin on his tail all the way past the waves giving us a very cool show.
