That's a tough question, as there have been some real geniuses througout the years. Lenny Bruce, Kaufman, Martin, Woody A., Brooks (Al and Mel !), Carlin, Murphy, Cantinflas, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Llloyd, Dave Chapelle, Benny Hill....just a few that spring to mind.

Then there's the French ones I grew up with: Coluche, Louis de Funes, Les Inconnus, Armand Bernard....

And then there's the list of jokers on FNN..... ha ha!!

Speaking of comedians: Thanks to the help of a good Team 57 friend, I did just surprise my wife to an early valentine's gift to go see Joel Mchale last night at Pechanga. (he's the the guy from E! Soup). Thought he was pretty funny at times, though I can't say I'm a fan of him or even watch E! all that much.

I also enjoy watching the old Dean Martin Roasts on YouTube. Foster Brooks is hilarious.

I like watching Jack Benny because of his great timing. He knew exactly when to talk and how to react. He conditioned his audience so that all someone had to do was make a reference to his miserly ways or his perpetual age of 39, and the audience would burst into hysterics. He and his cast consisting of Mary Livingstone, Don Wilson, Rochester, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Mel Blanc, and many others kept the show at the top for more than thirty years on both radio and television.

George Burns and Gracie Allen are the best husband-and-wife comedy team there ever was. I think it was best told when George said that Gracie, having somewhat "dimwitted qualities", would never tell a joke, but explain it. For example, she once said on one show, "George, I put two roasts in the oven. That way when the little one burns I know the big one is done." Gracie died early on, but George went on to making several pictures, writing a few books, and doing a routine based on his old age until he died in 1996 at age 100.

I enjoy several other pieces of old comedy, but Jack and George and Gracie will always be my favorite comedians. There are several great comedians today, but none are a match for the Forerunners of Comedy. They came out of vaudeville to radio and later television, and forever into the corners of the minds of all Americans. They had extraordinary timing, and, most of all, kept there material clean.

Jeff Dunham is funny. I saw him live at the Irvine Improv a few years back, and his show is way different (raunchy) than when the cameras are on him. I also saw a comedian, Ron Pearson, at the Icehouse in Pasadena and he had me laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe. Chris Rock usually makes me laugh too.
