ANYBODY GOING UP THE 395 FOR FISHING SHOULD STOP AND VISIT THE HATCHERY THEY ARE ONE OF THE ONLY LOWER OWENS HATCHERIES THAT STILL HAVE BROODERS,WHITNEY HAS THE BIG POND OUT FRONT BUT THE REST OF IT IS NON OPERATING,FISH CREEK HAS NO BREEDERS EITHER THEY TAKE THE EGGS AND SPERM FROM BLACK ROCK TO FISH CREEK TO HATCH THE EGGS THEN BRING FRY BACK TO BLACK ROCK,THEY HAVE TWO STRAINS OF RAINBOWS THE KAMLOOP JUNTION AND THE WHITNEY STRAIN, THEY ARE OPEN EVRY DAY FROM 8 TILL 4 IN THE AFTERNOON, IF YOU LOVE TROUT YOU SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS ONE TIME,,,,,,,,,troutonly

i wished i could have fished there, but the guys that work there did share places to try on the river , i got tipped off to a area right close to were i usally catch the big browns , it pays off to do good work for folks and to be nice to them,,,,,,,,it's worth the stop to see what they do and how they do it , the lake diaz derby coming pretty soon will get more of there big fish than any brooder plants they decide to do,,,,a couple hundred big boys,,,,,,,,,,

I was scouting for deer up behind the black rock hatchery the day after thanksgiving and it was amazing to see the damage that the mud flows caused a couple years back . It changed the natural course of the creek .

Great pictorial report!

Never been there....will have to put that on the ever growing list of "Sierra things to do".

The "Kamloops" BC strain has a lot of trout history (especially trout-marketing history) behind it...

Thanks for posting this Excellent post--really cool to see where the fish come from--and what is involved in beeding and raising them. Will have to try an Owens run in April--one excellent river to fish!

Thanks for the post T/O. I like going to Hatcheries. My wife and I took my son to the Fillmore Hatchery last Saturday. We all had fun and we spent 80 cents.
