One of the death-defying crab-boat captains of Deadliest Catch is fighting for his life.

Phil Harris remains hospitalized in Alaska after suffering a stroke Friday while offloading his vessel, the Cornelia Marie.

"Captain Phil is resting comfortably and is in the care of excellent doctors and nurses," reads an update on the Discovery Channel show's website (http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/deadliestcatch/phil-harris/).

Harris has been a fixture on the reality show since its debut. His health became a major storyline during the 2008 season, when he was sidelined after a blod clot passed through his lungs. Doctors said the pulmonary embolism could have killed him.

Harris has skippered the Cornelia Marie for nearly two decades, with sons Josh and Jake serving as deckhands in recent years.

Both are with Harris in the hospital, according to the network, and they "thank everyone for their heartfelt thoughts and prayers."

Damn that sucks...i hope for a quick recovery...Working on a commercial boat with his pre existing condition especially in a high stress job like that it was almost inevitable. i know from my deckhand experience watching my captians blood pressure go thru the roof during stress full times........

That's too bad. I really have grown to like Captain Phil and his sons over the past few seasons. I had a bad feeling when he came back as captain last season. That job is way too stressful for someone in poor health. I hope he recovers, and received all the necessary medical attention as soon as possible, cause that makes a huge difference.

Good luck Captain Harris!

Hope he gets better. I knew this was coming though. Smoking as much as he was and coughing up blood is not a good sign. He just kept smoking. Hope he gets well soon!

Hope he makes a full recovery. This job might have a high pay out if you find the crabs but if you are the owner/capt that is a lot of stress to take on esp if you are not catching he needs to let his boys learn more and take over.

'Deadliest Catch' Captain Out of Coma

Posted Feb 3rd 2010 12:45AM by TMZ Staff (http://www.tmz.com/bloggers/tmz-staff/)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tmz.com/media/2010/02/0203_harris_tmz.jpgCaptain Phil Harris from "Deadliest Catch" woke up from a medically induced coma Tuesday, according to his sons -- and immediately started barking commands from his Anchorage hospital bed.

Jake and Josh Harris tell TMZ their dad "showed some good signs of improvement" today, including squeezing their hands.

Harris' sons -- who both work with him aboard the F/V Cornelia Marie -- say they are "encouraged but still very cautious" as Captain Phil recovers from the stroke he suffered on Friday.

One really good sign -- his sons tell us that shortly after waking up, Harris told his doctors and nurses: "Don't f-up."

Aye, aye Captain.

Phil Harris, captain of one of the crab-fishing vessels featured on the Discovery Channel (http://dsc.discovery.com/) series "Deadliest Catch (http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/deadliestcatch/deadliestcatch.html)" is showing sign of improvement after suffering a stroke Saturday.
Harris was transported to a local medical facility, where he has been resting comfortably.
His sons, Jake and Josh, have released the following statement regarding their father's condition:

"No one ever said Captain Phil Harris wasn't tough. Today, dad showed some good signs of improvement, squeezing our hands and even summoning his trademark Captain's bluntness. We are encouraged but still very cautious."

"It is a long road ahead, but it's made more bearable and comforting knowing your thoughts and prayers are with us. We are strong because of you -- our fans. Thanks and we will continue to update you as best we can going forward."
Harris suffered a stroke while in port offloading his vessel, the 128-foot Cornelia Marie, which he has captained for 18 years. His sons work as deckhands on the boat.
