Fishing Castaic upper 1/28/10

Arrived at the lake around 10:50, loaded the boat and was in the water by 11:15. Stepping out of the boat onto the dock a small hole in my pants turned into a huge tear.:Embarrassed: It went from a belt loop all the way down to just above my knee, between my pocket and my zipper. It took a few seconds for it to sink in and I just busted up lmao.
For the first couple of hours I was throwing big baits then switched over to jigging. I found a school chasing shad and stopped on them jigging a bucktail/grub combo. Pulled out 2 dinks under 2# from that in 90’ of water.
For the last few hours, I headed over to the buoy line to kick back and do the b&w. I had cut ‘dines on one rod and whole pinhead ‘chovies on the other. The pinheads got no action but the ‘dines were getting bites.

Caught this one on a chunk…It went 24” and just under 5½#...

Not a bad upgrade from the schoolie size I’ve been catching lately.

As I was pulling the hook, I could see a nice sized fish cruising about 5-10’ under the boat. I grabbed the jig setup and gave a cast. I could see the fish chasing but it wasn’t bititng. Dropped that and threw the swim bait, nope. Chunk bait…nothing. Grabbed my d/s on 6# and got thumped but no one was home. Dropped it back down, gave a couple of shakes and….BENDO! Then…….BiiNK! The line got wrapped around the tip of the rod and snapped.:Evil: It felt like I was fishing for mahi under the boat, I couldn’t believe it.

Here’s a pic from a couple weeks back. I was in 80-90’ of water but was jigging the column about 40’ and got this catfish. It was a strange catch, never caught a cat jigging mid depth, or jigging at all.lol

I am probably heading out there tomorrow. That is a quality striper you caught! So you were just taking the sardine and then making 2 slices and got a nice chunk? My dad and Robo Bass have caught fish on the chunk, but I always catch mine on a fillet with guts and skin and everything still intact. I might try a chunk tomorrow.

I never fished the fillet. Chunking I try to get 3 or 4 pieces depending on the size of the sardine. You might have something going using the guts tho, goodluck!
