Dear Neighbor,

I hope you and your family have safely weathered our recent storms and were able to avoid any damage to your home or car. After so much rain, you might be thinking that our drought is over but, unfortunately, California’s water crisis will not be solved by a week full of rainstorms.

On Monday, I participated in a field hearing in Los Angeles held by the House Subcommittee on Water and Power Oversight Field Hearing on "Perspectives on California Water Supply: Challenges and Opportunities."

While I appreciated the Committee’s willingness to hold a hearing, I am very frustrated with the federal government’s unwillingness to ease restrictions on water pumping operations in the Bay Delta. Restrictions were put in place because of the Endangered Species Act and an effort to replenish the Delta smelt fish population. However, this past summer the smelt population fell back to the historic low set in 2005, and is now well below high points recorded in the late 1970s. Given these findings, I don’t know how anyone can say the Delta pumping restrictions are benefiting the Delta smelt. Meanwhile the devastating economic impacts across our state and particularly in the Central Valley are undeniable. It is time that the federal government put people before fish and lift the restrictions on the Delta pumping operations.

Please read my full opening statement from the hearing below and take a quick survey. I always appreciate your thoughts and opinions on issues such as the current water problems in California.

Sincerely,

KEN CALVERT
Member of Congress
Corona, CA

I find it interesting that the only way to email Mr. Calvert is through a web-form, and then only if you live in the right zip code.

At any rate, I'd love to get his opinion on the California Water Wars.

He no longer represents me since I moved, but I think highly of most of his positions on issues--ESPECIALLY on 2nd Amendment and sports-persons' rights.

i will not support him and stealing nor cals water isnt the answer to are water problems its much more complicated than that and dvl isnt low because of the pumping issues it is low because of the mussel issues the mwd could open the Colorado river water pipes and fill it back up in a couple of months if they really wanted to in the end its all about the money.

Mr. Calvert does not need the vote of a simple minded person, such as yourself. To ignore the impact of the Delta water is like saying Joan Rivers didn't have plastic surgery.

I'm always amazed at how people like Mr. Calvert get re-elected but after reading the above quote it makes perfect sense.

DVL gets its water from the Colorado river, not water from the Delta.

Really?

I thought DVL was connected to Silverwood. Silverwood is connected to Aquaduct, i.e., the State Water Project. The State Water Project gets its water from the Delta. Therefore...

And yes, DVL also gets its water from the Colorado through the San Diego Canal.

I love to see a brim full resevoir as much as anyone but I and my father grew up on the banks of the San Jouquin and Merced rivers and have seen the monumental damage done to fish populations throughout our great state due to these "projects".
The Delta smelt happens to be the spotted owl of the delta that is being used to control the rape of an entire region"s water and aquatic environment. The silver salmon that once choked every tributary upstream of the Golden Gate are basically gone, the chinooks are declining badly as well as steelhead. Even the stripers are declining in the delta.
The loss of our salmon in Northern California has adversely affected thousands of businesses, even before the shutdown on the coast of salmon fishing, boats wouldn't bother with salmon in the north. Not enough fish as well as a very short season.
Simply too many people in a place without enough water.

Your right. I wasn't aware that they recently finished the Inland feeder from Silverwood to the San Diego canal. So yes, DVL now has two water sources. However, I still think that what they do at the delta has little effect on DVL.
