The clouds looked ominous on the horizon Saturday evening as I went to bed. I woke up to a patchy sky, but knew the rain wasn’t supposed to come in until late, so dad and I went off down for another day of bass fishing before El Niño would take its course and roll over the water. We arrived at Redondo with a few other folks eager to get out on the water. We rolled off the dock at 6am and headed north, telling jokes with some friends and enjoying Derrick’s breakfast burritos. After a good ride up the line, we set up at our first spot and started fishing.
Locating the rock was easy, and we started catching some nice bass. This spot petered out after a while, and we moved on. The next spot was very grabby, but we only got one bass off of it. The spot after that held some nice quality bass. I also got triggerfish bit a few times on consecutive casts, and finally, one angler managed to hook and land it. We found a spot soon after that held some sculpin, most of them being economy sized with fish up to two pounds. The last spot of the day held the majority of the bass caught. We also were in for an extremely rare event: witnessing a sea turtle. It didn’t even notice us as it came swimming towards the side of the boat. It hesitated for a brief second, then dove under us and swam off. I really wish I would’ve gotten a picture of it up close, but we did see it about 50 yards away, and I managed to take a picture of it the best I could (pictured below).

We ended up with a little over 50 bass and quite a few sculpin for our efforts. Just as we left for home, it started to rain. It was pouring by the time we got back into King Harbor. I pray that the fishing won’t take a nose dive once all the storms pass. Remember to stay safe, stay warm, and be wary of your car hydroplaning while driving on the freeway. Great times, great fishing!
