boats and registration

So I have been looking at boats lately and there are always some good deals with boats that expired registration.

Is it like buying a car with expired registration that all the back tags have to be paid as well? How much are fees usually per year?

I know more than I would like to know about DMV and cars, but clueless on boats.

i took my boat and it wasnt registered for 10 years it wasnt even in the system.i had to pay100 and bring the trailor in for them to verify and that was it.
