Does anybody know if yellowfin and spotfin croackers caught off of Seal Beach Pier are safe to eat. I looked on the official California game and fish website, and they did not have Seal Beach Pier included under the California saltwater fish eating advisory. They did mention that white croackers caught off of Belmont Pier should not be eaten more than once every 2 weeks, and that Huntington Pier did not show any significant polutnants in the water. Since Seal Beach Pier is halfway betwwen these 2 piers, I was wondering where that puts it at.

Thanks

i wouldnt eat much off of seal beach pier, seeing as it sits right next to where the san gabriel river runs off into.

FYI: all the species of fish you mention are notorious bioaccumulators. Be very careful if you are going to feed kids any surf caught fish. The SoCal shoreline is rather dirty, even in those areas which are not on the advisory list!

I personally would not eat ANY type of croaker. Like Sansou said, they do injest toxic waste due to their inshore botton feeding habits. The general rules are its safe to eat any fish 2 miles from the shore

There's actually a sign warning you to NOT eat the croakers caught in Alamitos Bay. Seal Beach pier isn't that far off. I would have to say definately don't eat them.

The chemicals that were illegally dumped into our coast during 70's does not dissolve and disappear in our waters. The chemical are ingested by shellfish, worms, and bait fish. The higher you go up the food chain (where sea creature have ingested smaller creatures that were contaminated), the higher concentration of chemicals you will be consuming. BIOMAGNIFICATION.

Since the croaker species feed mostly on sea worms, mussel, clams, sand crabs etc... I would not consider eating them. A meal here and there but not be too harmful, but follow the DFG consumption guidelines.

On a funny note, it is odd how we as anglers are so health conscious when it comes to eating fish, but many of us smoke, eat fattening foods, are over-weight and drink as alcoholics.
