Is the Shimano BC Core 51MG7 good for surf fishing use? Any opinions on it? Thanks!

The closest mine will ever get to salt is 2' away from the Curado 201D which I use for salt.....

I'm sure it would be fun to use in the salt though... but i'll never know

The older MG models were a NO NO for salt use.....but now Shimano has "coated" the MG reels with a hard clear coating the is suppose to protect against salt corrosion.....but for the money I would not even chance it!!!!

I just used an Abu Garcia reel for salt, that reel was *only* for salt, love it. Never took it on the surf... But 6 years use exclusively for sandies on my uncles boat gave it plenty of chances to get wet.

Never had a problem, big lover of Abu Garcia reels here.

I use the Abu Revo Inshore reels....but I do also fish with Shimano Curados. The Revo Inshore is my goto reel....super smooth and plenty of drag when I need it!

Definitely a no. One deep scratch in the coating and the reel is probably done (it will happen), plus flushing out and cleaning that many bearings is not a fun job. That thing is going to require a lot of maintenance to make sure it doesn't corrode, and I wouldn't feel comfortable hooking something big on it (big leopard shark, WSB, snag a ray, etc). Line capacity and power being the two main issues since it's a 50 size bass reel. Also, that reel will probably never be smooth after a few dunkings in the waves with all the stirred up sand. All aluminum is the way to go.

If you are thinking of spending that much on a reel (assuming you want finesse here), then a Chronarch D would be a better bet. You can back it with braid to get the capacity, no worries about the aluminum corroding, and the reel has more power than the 50. I've used one in the surf and it was an awesome reel! Cast really far, didn't mind getting dunked, and had enough power.

I bought a Revo Inshore LH from this guy.

The payment method was a little screwy but I checked him out first and took a risk. It worked out OK and the reel is awesome.

Unless you're reel cleaning saavy or have a Nessie Hunter to clean your reels all the time, I wouldn't. Especially not in the surf. Many better choices for the salt environment.

Try to find a used Calais 100.
