It was an overnighter...7-7-07 7-8-07
My uncle decided that he was gunna take me on a tuna charter as a graduation present! woohoo. We get to the Fisherman's Landing and its completely packed with people either leaving or coming in. We unloaded our stuff and watched the Pacific Dawn unload its catch from the trip before ours. They said they caught about 58 and lost around 10-12. After I heard this, I got REALLY excited. Got all our gear on the boat around 9:30 pm and immediately claimed a bunk for my cousin and I. We did the usual: picked up bait and went straight for the fishing grounds. I went down into the bunk room and HOLY COW IT WAS FREEZINGGGG, but they have nice thick blankets, fell asleep in like 10 minutes... At around 530, i woke up and as soon as i did, we started moving.
20 minutes pass and FISH ON! (jig strike) i go outside grab a fit sardine and toss it and let it swim. Got nothing this time around, but alot of other people did.
MY TURN ON TROLL PATROL: we start trolling and i get my breakfast burrito, and i thought to myself: after i finish this my rod WILL buckle over and i'll be fighting my FIRST tuna EVER. about 3/4 of the way through my burrito, MY ROD BUCKLED OVER! I grab it and set the hook and yell FISH ON! I basically threw my burrito to my cousin, and started to fight the battle. 10 minutes later i bring up a nice 20+ pounder, thinking to myself "that wasn't so bad". While it was chaos outside, i went into the galley to finish my burrito. :D
It starts to slow down for a little while.. and then all of a SUDDEN FISH ON! except this time: I was the first one to throw out a fresh sardine. Let it swim out and WHOOSH there goes my line, i flip it into gear and set the hook. FISH ON! ZINNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG my reel is screaming and the guy next to me is like "THAT IS A PISSED OFF FISH!" LOL. So here i go again: fight the fish, bring it in 5 minutes later. NICE AND EASY. THERES NUMBER 2... first i was grateful and now im getting greedy thinking "I WANT MORE"
SLOWS WAY DOWN, no bite for 2 HOURS, then HOOK UP! Chaos everywhere, people screaming, blood everywhere, sardines flying, tuna thrashing. THEN IT STOPS. JUST LIKE THAT.
We start to troll again, after 2 minutes, FISH ON! BOIL HERE BOIL THERE, BOIL EVERYWHERE, PURE CHAOS, then it died. I went into the galley had lunch then i dozed off for a 20 minute power nap when i abruptly woke up to "FISH ON!" i got up and AMAZINGLY was the 1st person again to get a sardine in the water. Free spool gets PULLED LIKE CRAZY, flip it in gear and set the hook, this one ran for a minute straight! started pulling it in slowly, i saw the color after about 10 minutes and it took off again! Started the battle from the beginning, and got it up to the surface. The deckhand goes to gaff it and it slips off the gaf and falls back in the water snapping my line. MIke has a mouth as clean as a toilet bowl. He was cussing like crazy. People that saw my fish said it was a BIG one, i saw it for a split second. They also said it could of easily won the jackpot, NO CONTEST. There goes my chances... oh well hard come easy go lol. After that it slowed WAYY down. Only a few here and there. Ended up with 28 for the whole boat (MAJOR SLOW DAY!) But there 20 people fishing, 1 was super sick, so thats 1 per person. :?
