I just dont get it, man. I have a friend that likes to fish, but hes afraid to step in water 3 feet deep.

And he wont hook his own worms, and he's afraid of sand crabs.

What the hell?

Any of you guys know a friend like that? How the hell do you get someone like this to step into the water? Do I have to kidnap him at dawn and kick him off the jetty into the surf?

Why even get in the water ? When fishing Corbina the guys in the water are in the fish zone. Halibut is a different story.

Fishing Corbina is more like trout fishing as you can spook them easily. I have fished were you can cast your bait on the wet sand, and wait for the next wave to bring in the fish and water.

That is a BIG MISTAKE PEOPLE DO WHEN GOING FOR INSHORE CORBINA IS TO GET IN THE WATER. Unless it is a real low tide. Remember that Corbina eat sand crabs and they are in the wet sand area.

It sounds like your buddy is not a waterman and scared of the ocean no biggie.

When I was surf fishing alot about 3 years ago most after work sessions were 1 - 2 hours. I would go in my work jeans (winter), boots, and stay above the 'wet zone'

Why get in the water when you have a little shore pound and a inshore trench.
When I see guys on FNN with waders, backpacks, multi-rods ect it seems to be alot of gear. But then again I don't go for long 1/2 day + excursions/walks.

I see guys always in the water and most of the time they are only 20' past where you can stand on the dry zone.

Also when you are out in the water you miss out on the beach walking babes.
Yeahha
Summertime is a different story, just where trunks.

I know somebody like that....would'nt get in the water. He would fish from the sand with his jeans and shoes on. After a few trips of running back and forth when the waves would come in and getting his shoes wet he started taking his shoes off and walking deeper and deeper in the water. Now when we go surf fishing he shows up in trunks and not afraid to go in waist deep....

Umm... I really recommend getting the guy comfortable with the ocean first. If he can't swim, I can sort of understand his concern, but if he can swim he just needs to get used to the ocean. Grab a surf board or a bodyboard and take him to the beach. Give him the board so he has a flotation device (can't drown), stand right next to him, and have him try and catch a few waves. Once he's comfortable with that, there should be no reason for him to be scared of wading.

That's good advice. Start him off in a small pool like these chicks,

Then work him up to a floatation device like the kid below.

DR has the perfect solution! Get him some water wings and one of those inner tube things and have him bounce around in the waves.

Really though, if the guy is a good swimmer there shouldn't be a problem. If he can't swim, I can kind of understand why he would be scared. To help him with that, he needs to learn how to swim. Take him to a pool or water park and get him used to swimming in that case.

The guy is nearly 40, for crying out loud. Inexcusable.

Hes not afraid of water, and can swim, but the ignorant wussy thinks everything in the ocean is out to get him, because of propaganda like SharkWeek, aimed to make everyone fear sharks.

Im going to have to force him to surf fish, every time he tries to leave, I'm going to sock him. Freaking 40 for god's sake.

This is why i hate tv.

I'll admit, I used to surf fish when I was a lot younger (like, 18-20) and I was a real dumbass about it. I mean I went out to almost chest high water all the time, rough conditions, strong wave, took 'rogue waves' to the face (i literally just put the rod up and jumped a bit) and I can't tell you how many times the seas were too rough and I let them knock me on my *** at the beach.

Looking back that was not only very silly ~ But kinda dangerous.. I know it's for sure made me more timid with surf fishing than I was before.

Don't be idiots out there!
