Here's a Pixel-piece I worked on a while back, when I was working with some fledgling game developers.

This is pixel art.. Kind of like a Mosaic on the microscopic level.
It utilizes techniques like manual anti-aliasing, and selective outlining-- And low color counts, which makes it easier on the system running the game for optimum speed.
Anti-Aliasing is a form of illusion that tricks you into thinking something is smooth.
