Launched our boat at noon on the 4th at Queensway Ramp with my Wife Denise, daughter Jessica and Grandson Evan, found a good spot to anchor up and watch the fireworks....

Next day we drop the kids off near Joes Crab Shack where my other daughter was waiting to pick them up and Denise and I are off to Catalina for a mini 4 day vacation......we stop at Nachos and get some huge Dines (the size of Mini Macs)

On the way out we spot the fleet at Horseshoe and see Barracuda Jumping out of the water everywhere where we stop and get bit instantly.....we released a couple and head for Cat...Smooth ride over, got there in an hour...

We set anchor at Willow Cove in about 60 ft. and start fishin the Dines (Radio Chatter on the way over said some yellows were caught there earlier) Denise gets a Birds nest on the Penn 500 25lb stick and grabs her 15 lb. set up and Gets Slammed on a Yellowtail ,She gets it to deep color and it makes another run and Breaks off......after that nothin but catch and release Bonito......

Friday Morning we hail the LB Carnage and get some Squid and make the run to Empire Landing.....

We set up in about 80ft. and its WFO Calico Bass.....The Calicos were so thick you couldn't get Through them .... we must have caught and released 40 to 50 calicos and Kept 2 for the barbque later......

We ran up and down the front side from Avalon to the Isthmus, fished in 20 - 100 ft. and all we found was Calicos.....one spot we were boarded by Fish and Game to Show Licenses and our 2 Calicos we had kept....They thanked us for only taking what we were going to eat and I Thanked them for being out there to Protect our Fisheries...

Then we headed to a little cove and set up in 30ft. where we fired up the barbque and had a great Calico lunch.....This cove had a Small boat imbedded in the sand......

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n70/cnccustom/Picture155.jpg

After lunch we Drop the lines and were surprised that no Calicos were attacking our bait as it hit the water, Hoping for Maybe a Halibut when my reel starts Screaming and its heading for deeper water, I jump up on the Bow to fight this thing and he is still taking line so I am thinking Mud Marlin, Then I am able to turn him and feel headshakes, So now im thinking Hold Over White Sea Bass ....after about 15 minutes I start gaining line and see this Huge fish at Deep color....Turns out to be a Black Sea Bass......not sure what he weighed but I estimated 60-80 lbs.....Pictures don't do it justice it was about 5ft. long

I get him up and he turns belly up on me and I start moving him back to the Stern where I can help to revive Him.....I cut the line and jump on the swim platform to help him out and after about 10 minutes he has enough in him to take off back to the bottom.. .......I have to admit I didn't think he was going to make it at first but was sure glad that he Did......at one point I was freaking out on the radio to ask for help reviving him and one guy comes over the radio and says Lick his B@lls it works every time.........

After that the Calicos were at it Again

Saturday we spent the day on the Island and had a Killer Halibut Fish and Chips at Original Jacks.......Highly recomended if you go there, Priced right too

We get back to the Boat around 3:00 to look for an evening bite on the Backside, went to Church Rock where the Phantom was set up but the wind was starting to pick up the white caps so we headed back to the front
where stop after stop it was Wide Open Calicos and blue perch..

We set up in Little Goat for the Night and got ready for the trip home in the morning......left Catalina at 8:00 am a little Bumpy coming home but not real bad......had the Boat Clean and at Storage by 10:30

All in All we had a Great Trip weather was perfect.....No Yellows this time but we'll get ours..........Till next time.........

Great report and congrats on the BSB and the successful release!

It was interesting to see that old boat wreck. I have a pic of that from a few years back. It's sure deteriorated since then...

It's been a while - the only thing I remember about where it is is that it's on the front side of Catalina somewhere between Avalon and the Two Harbors. Lotta help, huh?

When me, Hakaveli, and zZang were on the Spitfire for a 3/4 day, we say that boat too, I think it was near Bird Rock

Great report and pics. Congrats on the BSB release. It's kind of errie when they come up and float. Check with your local tackle and ask if they have a bladder needle. Deflating the bladder greatly reduces the mortality rate.
