Took my good friend Ed over to Catalina today for his first ever SW Bass fishing trip. Set him up with a 15lb spinning outfit and off we went.

Crossing was a bit of a beeyyach today with wind/swell pretty crossed up both ways.

Hit up the back side for a few nice ones on swimmies and iron.

Got one that went well over 6lbs but for some reason the photo jpg is corrupted on the camera. Lots of 3-5lb fish today.

Later in the day he managed to pull this one out of the kelp. Nice fish and consider Ed is about 6'5" and goes 250

A few others

They all had really full bellies and were puking up small anchovies when we boated them:

Swimbait of choice today:

On the way back, we ran into these guys again today, a few miles off the front side of Cat.

Very nice job on the fish :thumb: As for the dolphins, I've never seen that type of dolphin with that type of color, maybe a migrating resident?

I think it's a whale of some sort, but I'm not quite sure what. Dolphins, as far as I know, have a dorsal fin.

Awesome report and some very nice looking Calico's........

Not sure on the whale species ..... kinda looks like a "Pilot" whale but with some strange coloring......

Hopefully someone can ID it.... very cool pics of it though!

It's a Risso's Dolphin.

Ryan look at the back, see the fin.

Used to see them at the Northern Channle Islands.

VERY COOL!

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This is a relatively robust dolphin with a rounded head, similar in shape to the more familiar pilot whale. They have an unusual external vertical crease in the melon (the organ in the rounded head used to direct sonar clicks) that runs from the front of the forehead to the mouth.

OK, I see it now that I've REALLY looked at it. I thought the fin was one of its flippers.
