I read about a few guys nailing them lately, up to 36lbs. The guys were on kayaks fly lining large makerel, and dropping irons to the bottom in about 140' of water, outside the reserve, 2-4 miles out past the kayak launch in La Jolla. Good luck out there and let us know how it went.

Huh?!
I haven't read anything or talked to anyone who says they have caught one.. In fact I was out on the water today and talking with other boaters they said it was pretty mellow today.
Good Luck and be Safe

I'm pretty sure it's Playa Del Norte Street, if I remember correctly.

The kayak for fish website usually has some decent near shore reports for the San Diego area. I've been checking out this site for a few years and the winter yellowtail are chewing this time of year, there seems to be a few thresher hanging out in the area as well.

My son hooked up on a 4-5 foot thresher on Saturday but busted off. We were not fishing for shark...:EyePop:
