View Full Version : Legals Butts and a New Species! Sunday Morning S.W.A.T. Session 12/20/09

Headed out to the surf this morning for a few hours with Flyngby and BSP for a Level 3 S.W.A.T. mission. We hit the surf without any high expectations due to the high surf conditions the last few days and the gradual cool down of water temperature.

My work has been quite hectic with the Holiday Season and I just wanted to get out there to get my fix before starting another grueling work week dealing with the Christmas rush. Last night was my company Christmas party and needless to say… I was operating on zero sleep and a well depleted energy tank. But Steve and Marc kept me going all morning and the final results were more than acceptable. Bones & JerryG, we missed you guys out there!

Conditions: Mild temperature with hazy sunshine. Moderate surf with swells up to 3-4 feet with the wash cycle in full effect. Water clarity pretty much clear and void of salad in most areas, surprisingly with the recent high surf. Very little baitfish presence.

Techniques: All three of us were throwing hard baits.

Fishing time: 7:00am to 12:00 noon.

Total "Team" Fish Count - All Released.
(3) Legal Halibut (22", 23", 24")
(1) Short Halibut
(1) Zebra Surf Perch
(2) Smelt

Overall, it was a relatively slow morning. But I'm not complaining at all about the legal to short Flatties ratio. :Big Grin:

Definitely a good day, even though I wore the skunk. The company and jokes more than made up for the lack of fish. Can't wait to do this again soon... except with a few more halibut in the picture. The SWAT mentality helps motivate everybody, and you can't help but have a positive surf fishing experience with the SWAT guys around.

Arthur, once again we hit the surf and have a solid day! You've got a great sense of humor, and congrats on the PB zebra perch. Too bad the blood didn't attract anything today. You beat me in the fish count (again), but victory will eventually be mine . All I have left to say is... WHY!?!?!

Steve, you are one killer surf fisherman, and an all around great guy. Sorry about the few downers that happened today, but there's a huge halibut in your future because of it. I am glad to finally have met you, and hope we can share the surf again! :Big Grin:

I don't know where Wingnut buys his LCs exactly, but I do know that they're Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110s. You can get them at Hooked Up Tackle, Angler's Center in Newport Beach, Performance Tackle in Los Alamitos, and a lot of other tackle stores. Chain stores generally won't carry them, but actual tackleshops near the coast will

I called Arthur last night to confirm that we were still on and he confirmed that it was a go even though he was hosting his Company Party and would not get much if any sleep! I had to make it a short session due to a family get together!

I asked if he had looked at the surf reports and he told me it would be fine. So I informed him of the conditions I encountered at the same location that were supposed to be like calm lake conditions on Friday, but were by far the well over head high surf and pretty much non-fish able!:EyePop:

Arthur and I met at just past of grey light and suited up for what I knew would be a step up from all of my previous S.W.A.T. Missions. Time to suck it up and get worked in the surf!!:Guns:

We hit it up and Arthur almost ran to the corner of the spot and within a few casts had a fish that I knew was special even though he was quit a distance away. I moved down to his location to photo his first fish of the day a nice Zebra Perch.

He quickly followed with his first Legal Flattie of the day. I mixed in farm job on what was a nice Flattie that came unbuttoned.

Arthur managed to work his magic for 2 more legals berore we looked up to see Marc (BSP) looking over the horizon with that look of who are these 2 poachers on my spot!!!!!

Was great to finally meet you in person Marc. Had a great time getting rolled in the waves with you and Arthur today!!!!!

Twas a nice short 5 hour session with you guys today!

Hopefully I'll find more time to fish with the SWAT crew next year. Merry Christmas my friend.

I'm glad you guys made a productive day at what is now my favorite place to fish. Arthur....What can I say.......God is always on your side my friend and it's nice to see that karma has treated you well for all of the giving you always do. If it isn't too much to ask.....Can ya PLEASE toss some of that Karma my way......LOL

With all of the different species you have been sticking lately I'm sure that elusive striper from the surf is just around the corner for ya bro!

Steve.....Heard ya got tossed one real good time and I'm sure Arthur got a chuckle out of it for sure. Good job beating the skunk though dude. Good to see that you are ok after all of the mud slides too.
Marc......What can I say......You are such a trooper young man. Whenever you stick a PB in that spot is always seems that the next time out kicks your butt. Now get back there and stick that 30 incher. Ya gotta drag pops down there at greylight to get ahead of Wingnut!!!!

Great post! It just goes to show you that the surf doesn't shut down after the summer ends. Of course, some people are beyond clueless, like the surfer at Zuma Beach who saw me fishing as he came in out of the water and said: "You mean there's actually fish in the surf?" Of course, those of us who know better actually catch these actual fish. But getting back to the post, I haven't done much surf fishing with artificials, i.e LuckyCrafts, which seem to be the Kobe Bryants of the game. They seem to catch everything from your standard issue BSP to calico bass. But the halibut are the fish everybody targets. All this being said, I have had zero success with lures in the surf, but I want to learn. Any chance of joining up for a future SWAT team excursion?

SWAT-

I wish I could have made it out to fish with you guys. Looks like you had a great time. I was committed to another mission as we had promised to take the kids to the zoo yesterday. Work, family commitments, and bad weather have kept me off the water for the past several weeks. I can’t wait to get back in action. Hopefully we can all fish together sometime soon. Glad to see you guys got on some nice fish. I see once again the weapon of choice was the modified Blingnut Chovie pattern (Wingnut’s Signature Series). Congratulations on another successful swat mission. Well done guys. No fish is safe when SWAT is on the job.

Wingnut-

So you host a Holiday party then on no sleep hit the beach for the winter grey light bite and catch three legal halibut plus a big zebra perch. NICE…I don’t know how you do it Arthur but you have amazed me once again my friend. So how did that Zebra fight hard or what? I’ve caught a few Zebras over the years and they get my vote for the hardest fighting perch. I had a chance to check out the Team57 site. Congratulations on the Daniel Award. Well deserved Arthur. Your determination and positivity is an inspiration to us all…

Flyngby-

Sorry to hear about your loss butt. It's just never easy dealing with the loss of a big butt. Sorry Steve..I’m sure you'll get her next time.

BSP-

Hang in there with the winter bite BSP. It can be rough and tough fishing during winter butt if you stick with it the potential rewards can be well worth the effort. You will getum. If you really want to out fish Wingnut next time better bringing some kryptonite... LOL.. J/K You will get him one of these day..

Happy Holidays Guys…

nice going wingnut as always. i remember you carrying a handheld gps last time. what brand and model is it? one more thing, do you mind PMing me all the coordinates of where you're catching halibut?
I have a Garmin Colorado handheld GPS, a great little unit that served me well for the last couple of years. They have a new model out now called the Oregon with a touch screen... maybe Santa will bring me one for Xmas. The information on my Colorado is top secret and under 24 hour surveilance by a member of the S.W.A.T. security team, Wingnut Pug.

I was blessed with several delicious meals. It feels great to catch a legal Halibut, but it feels even better when you let one go. :Big Grin:

You were quite a warrior on Sunday buddy. I like the way you handled your weapon issues and getting up-ended by the surf. Most impressively, how well you took it after losing the big fish just after the grey light. Man, I feel the pain and it wasn't even my fish... she'll be out there waiting for you next time. Merry Christmas my friend.

Yeah, I'll take those shorts to legals Halibut ratio anyday. :Envious: I'm glad to see you find some time to fish Art. You've been so busy you don't even returm my calls. We need to hook up next week, got your Christmas present and you have to accept it because Lauren picked it out. Those are pretty decent size winter Halibuts. Hopefully I'll find more time to fish with the SWAT crew next year. Merry Christmas my friend.
I don't remember the last time the legal Halibut count beat the shorts by three to one! I'll take quality over quantity anytime. Yeah buddy, I've been crazy busy the last few weeks... a good thing in my line of business. Leave a message on my voicemail and I will always return your call. We'll exchange gifts sometime this week... Merry Christmas!

Man Arthur....... I need to go with you guys and learn the ways!!!!!
You are one of the few that received an invitation to fish with the S.W.A.T. Crew... the time will come, be ready Patrick.

x2..........
You got what it takes...?

Nice work SWAT!
You guys consistently pull in the fish!
Thanks for the report!
I wish you all the best this Holiday season! Merry Christmas!
Eric
Hope you got my Xmas card buddy. Merry Christmas to you, your Lady Legend and of course your new pup.

WOW! The new Team 57 Website is HOTT!
:Applause:
Dana worked really hard on that site Eric. It turned out great and will continue to get even better! :Big Grin:

Congrat. on the Hali's :Big Grin:
You S.W.A.T. ers sure know where to get -em!!!
Where did you fish this weekend FS? Hope you got on a few. Merry Christmas!

Another sick SWAT mission, someday i'll roll with the elite. Hey, why weren't i invited to the Christmas party???

Vince
The reason that you didn't get invited to the party is because you don't work for me Vincent. But I WILL see you at the New Year's Eve party.

Long time no see, my friend. Been pretty busy huh?

Quantity is lacking, quality is great. Great Job out there.
Busy is an understatement...
Quantity is always fun, but quality rules!

Well.....With a lower back that is toast right now I regretfully had to bow out of this session. Sucks but what the hell!

Mike, we missed you out there. Get your back in proper working rder and get back out there with us soon okay? Maybe, this New Year will be the year that I catch that ever so elusive surf Lineside. Looking forward to another fun year witht he S.W.A.T. Crew! Merry Christmas buddy.

:
The action in the surf doesn't shut down in the winter time... it just slows a bit. But if you know how and where to find them, they're still out there. Even if fishing with the S.W.A.T. Crew may not be possible... the reality is that we just can't fish with everybody. I can always help you out with tips & advice to get you going in the right direction. Shoot me a PM with any questions that you have regarding techniques, lures & equipment. I will do my best to help you catch your first Halibut on artificials. It's nothing like it!

Bravo to the S.W.A.T Crew, the surf fishing Elite, "Best of the Best". :Envious:
With all the catching aside, what I like best is the comraderie in your group. Nobody is above each other and creed you guys adhere to whenever you go out there. Great examples of sportsmanship for all to follow. Wishing you guys a very Merry Christmas and continued success in the coming New Year.
Thanks Binh, for all your support and especially for your frienship throughout the years. Merry Christmas my friend.

Nice going out there guys.

The dude in the spring suit had to been freezing his jingle balls off.

Thanks for another surf fishing report .
Now that's funny Patrick.
Actually the Spring suit keeps you pretty warm. The torso is most important, the legs just gets numb and after awhile, you can't feel them anyways.

Jerry, I wished that you could have been out there with us, but there will be plenty of good times ahead in the coming New Year.
You're right Jerry, the Zebra Perch fought like a champ. I told Steve that I thought that it was a nice Calico. The way they fight is pretty similar. What a cool fish!
Well, my friend and S.W.A.T ally, I'm glad that we got to meet and fish together this year.
Merry Christmas to you, your family and of course your Pugs!

Great report Artur,
I always know there are going to be some great pics when I see your posts.
When I went on Saturday I was only wearing shorts and flip-flops. The temperature wasn't that bad, in my opinion.

sidenote: I took some pics of my friends pug, Butch, but they came out lousy so I didn't download them for wingnut...:Big Grin:

Have a Safe and Merry Christmas to the Both of You
The main reason that I wear waders is because it allows me to stay in the surf longer. But shorts & flip flops is definitely the choice in the summer.
Thanks for taking the Pug pics... I appreciate the thought.
Have a blessed Christmas and a fantastic New Year!

Bones,

Sorry to hear about your back. Give yourself a little recovery time and you should be ready to fish before you know it. I'm sure you will have many missions to come in the new year. I hope your feeling better. Hang in there Mike.

Great report Arthur. Glad the surf laid down a little for you guys compared to our trip Friday. It was big Friday but I still had fun, even though Steve hiked my ***** off!

I look forward to a trip with you now, so we can continue our boat bantering in the surf!

Happy Holidays!

Why Marc...? WHY?!?
Don't worry about the Skunk Marc... the bite shut down right when you got there. It was pretty much an early morning bite. I had a fun time walking the surf and joking around with you. As always... there is something peaceful and assuring about turning around and seeing your Dad keeping a watchful eye over us from the sand.

Looking forward to the next mission with you guys and congrats on the Phenix Rods sponsorship! :Big Grin:

Thanks again Arthur, definitely can't wait to do this again! I'll beat down the skunk on our next trip... and remember BSP, YFC, KFC, CQC...

Thanks for the advice and encouragement Jerry. I'm hoping that the winter will kick out a 30in fish for me since the quality seems to be better like you said. As for the kryptonite, I'll have to remember that for next time.

I heard all about your introduction to the surf Eddie. :Big Grin: Steve sure picked a nice day to thow you into the fire. You will learn new things with every trip and when you get that first surf Hali, you'll be wanting to join the S.W.A.T. Crew for more missions.
Just so you know, the trash talking is twice as intense in the surf...
